Any interests in Digikam 2.0 packages and digikam PPA?

Philip Johnsson
Hi all

I think it's know to this list that I have Digikam 1.9 packages on my PPA for Ubuntu 10.10 but I have no idea on how may people use it or what the interest is, beside some people now and then get in touch with me about this and that with packages.

I just started to build packages of Digikam 2.0 beta3 for myself and wondered about what the interest in them are for you guys? They are made as digikam2 packages so they won't automatically update if you prefer to use the stable Digikam 1.9 but will conflict if you try to install them both at the same time. I might upload them to my kubuntu-backports PPA as you will need stuff from KDE 4.6 to build.

Second question is if you guys would prefer a separate digikam PPA with just digikam stuff instead of as it is now to use my "extra" and for exiv2 0.21.x support my kubuntu-backports PPA? For me it's easier to do as I'm doing now and upload my stuff to the "extra" PPA but I don't know how many of you don't want to use it because it includes a bunch of assorted updates that you want to leave as they are.

Feedback on this from anyone who cares are appreciated.

Happy digikaming!

Regards,

Philip

Just a quick note to thank you for packaging Digikam for Ubuntu.  I
have used your PPA for quite a while now.

I, for one, would be happy to start using the beta packages, as they
seem to be quite stable.

My preference would be a separate PPA but I completely sympathize with
your reluctance to increase the complexity of your packaging efforts.

Thanks again for your work,

I think it's a great idea to have digikam beta packages PPA and I know
many Digikam users would appreciate it. As long as there are a good
explanation i don't mind much if there are several PPA's or not.

Thanks for sharing your packages with us. Keep up the good work.

Hi,

I'm interested too. No matter about which way to do. I already use extra
and Kubuntu-backports PPA, so if you integrate Digikam 2.0 b3 in one of
them, it's ok for me.

I use your PPA since Lucid I think (may be Intrepid, I don't exactly
remember), and I fully appreciate it cause it integrate the Digikam
installation in Synaptic packet manager (which is not so easy for me by
building Digikam my self as I don't know how to make deb easily).

So thanks for that !

Regards,

Nicolas

I am more a photographer than a linux-expert and I have used your
"extra" happily . When I bought new equipment tree weeks  ago had to
use also "backports" yesterday. Worked fine too. Thanks!

It would be good to have the possibility to easily choose what one
wants and sometimes the only solution is a beta-version but usually
the stable version is what people like me need because we use this "in
production".

So I think that the need is for both an up-to date stable version and
also for a beta version for this distribution (10.10). Of course this
is more complicated for you. But it is great that you do this when
canonical don't!

Re: Any interests in Digikam 2.0 packages and digikam PPA?

Philip Johnsson
Thank you guys for the feedback!

I will keep the PPAs as they are for now. If I would make PPAs with only Digikam stuff then I have to make two different PPAs anyway. One for standard Ubuntu repositories and one with kubunt backports. Digikam 2.0 need dependencies from KDE 4.6.x to build so I would have to have its own PPA anyway.

I'll upload digikam 2.0 beta3 as soon I have done some clean ups with the packaging code. Right now I have made all stuff from digikam-software-compilation for myself and bundled them into two packages. I will split them up to make the parts easier to maintain over time with separate packages the Ubuntu/Debian way and a much nicer way to handle it all. I hope to be able to upload it into my kubuntu-backports PPA in the next few days.

Hope you guys are patient.

/Philip

Thank you Phillip. Add me to the list of happy "clients" of your PPA.....it was my salvation :-)

Please let us know here when digiKam 2.0 b3 is ready to roll.

Thanks again.

Hi Philip,

Thanks a lot for these ppa. I think they are very useful. Maybe you could get an account on DigiKam website to post a small blog entry when you update your ppas. For the beta a nightly build would be useful as well.

Thanks for your work.

Hi Phillip
As an ordinary non programmer user of DigiKam 1.2  on Ubuntu 10.04, i am
too scared to go to Ubuntu 10.10 because it is not a LTS version. On the

Hi Philip,

I've been using your PPA for quite some time, and I really, really appreciate
your work.

I just started to build packages of Digikam 2.0 beta3 for myself and wondered
about what the interest in them are for you guys? They are made as digikam2
packages so they won't automatically update if you prefer to use the stable
Digikam 1.9 but will conflict if you try to install them both at the same time.
I might upload them to my kubuntu-backports PPA as you will need stuff from KDE
4.6 to build.

That would be fantastic!

Second question is if you guys would prefer a separate digikam PPA with just
digikam stuff instead of as it is now to use my "extra" and for exiv2 0.21.x
support my kubuntu-backports PPA? For me it's easier to do as I'm doing now and
upload my stuff to the "extra" PPA but I don't know how many of you don't want
to use it because it includes a bunch of assorted updates that you want to
leave
as they are.

I think you should go with the solution that makes it easier for you. :-)

Best,
Dmitri

A package for mint9 (based on Lucid Linux LTS) will highly be appreciated...
Not every version, but  a release you feel appropriate  for a stable LTS,once every 3 to 6 months.
Thanks in anticipation

Re: Any interests in Digikam 2.0 packages and digikam PPA?

Philip Johnsson
In reply to this post by John Bestevaar
I'm afraid that Digikam 1.2 was the last version that could build on Lucid as Digikam is rather heavily dependent on recent KDE frameworks, even if you run Digikam from KDE or not. Lucid comes with KDE 4.4.5 (in lucid-updates) and from Digikam 1.3 you have needed at least KDE 4.5 to build it. Digikam 2.0 will need atleast KDE 4.6 to build. So it's not just laziness or disinterest that there is no newer updates for Lucid.

I can just say that you need to upgrade to more recent versions of Ubuntu if you want new versions of Digikam. :(

As an ordinary non programmer user of DigiKam 1.2  on Ubuntu 10.04, i am too scared to go to Ubuntu 10.10 because it is not a LTS version. On the other hand i don't have the skill needed to compile a more up to date version of Digikam for myself for Ubuntu 10.04. I checked your very impressive PPA on launchpad but did not see any Digikam package for Lucid Lynx.

Hi all

I think it's know to this list that I have Digikam 1.9 packages on my PPA
for Ubuntu 10.10 but I have no idea on how may people use it or what the
interest is, beside some people now and then get in touch with me about
this
and that with packages.

I just started to build packages of Digikam 2.0 beta3 for myself and
wondered about what the interest in them are for you guys? They are made
as
digikam2 packages so they won't automatically update if you prefer to use
the stable Digikam 1.9 but will conflict if you try to install them both
at
the same time. I might upload them to my kubuntu-backports PPA as you
will
need stuff from KDE 4.6 to build.

Second question is if you guys would prefer a separate digikam PPA with
just
digikam stuff instead of as it is now to use my "extra" and for exiv2
0.21.x
support my kubuntu-backports PPA? For me it's easier to do as I'm doing
now
and upload my stuff to the "extra" PPA but I don't know how many of you
don't want to use it because it includes a bunch of assorted updates that
you want to leave as they are.

Feedback on this from anyone who cares are appreciated.

Happy digikaming!

Re: Any interests in Digikam 2.0 packages and digikam PPA?

Philip Johnsson
Now it's done!

I have now uploaded packages with Digikam 2.0. I built them from today's code from git so it will be Digikam 2.0 beta4 in development (as you will see in the "about Digikam" window). If you feel experimental and want to go with more cutting edge code then you find the packages in my "kubuntu-backports" PPA. The main packages are called digikam2, showfoto2 and kipi-plugins2. That way you won't automatically get them updated if you prefer to still use the stable 1.9 release. You can't run them both at the same time on the same system as they will conflict. If you want to play safe then backup your Digikam settings and other stuff before you play around with the latest.

It all should just work but if you have any problems installing the packages then let me know.

Happy digikaming!

/Philip

You miss the Kubuntu teams PPA with KDE 4.6.x. You also need my "extra" PPA. Look at previous posts about the names of the three PPAs you need and how to add them.

Thanks for all the work!

Is it possible to get packages for Natty to? It would be very appreciated.

Philip Johnsson
Sure. It's much easier to package Digikam 2.0 for Natty as you can compile against standard stuff that comes with the dist instead of building special solutions. I'll do it as soon as I get time.
