Re: Missing menus

Derek Keats
@jdd

in DK 5.5 there are no menu bars on both Ubuntu 16.04, and 16.10
In DK 5.4 there are two menu bars on Ubuntu 16.04 and no menu bars on 16.10
Everything works fine in the Digikam 4 series on both versions of Ubuntu.
The problem is something introduced with Digikam 5.

Please see my first couple of posts.

It seems I have three choices
1. Use the Digikam 4 series
2. Pin Digikam 5.4 and not do any further upgrades
3. Use something else.

I'd prefer to use the new releases as they are continuously improved. The problem with option 3 is that there is nothing else in the occupied universe that comes remotely close to Digikam.

Thanks
Derek

so it just need to understand why there is a problem, not that easy as you didn't succeed yet :-(

but I seems to understand there is only one menu bat insted of two, I don't see why this prevent you from using digikam. I nearly never use menu bars with it

Yes, the editor is the issue. It works fine in everything EXCEPT the editor.
Without the editor, I can't use Digikam.

I need the edit menu. Otherwise I cannot edit the image. None of the edit functionality is accessible.
Not sure what you mean though about adding missing functions to the toolbar.  There are 45 items in the edit menu!
Are you saying that a work around is to create a toolbar and add those 45 items to it?

I think I understand better the situation, and may be found a solution

In digikam appimage, the editor is included and I didn't finf a way to
launch it alone - normally it's called "shofoto" and can also be called
independently.

When launched in ubuntu / appimage, the menu bar displayed is always the
main windows one, so I suppose that the problem is the fact that the
editor is a daughter windows, not the main one.

The may be solution is to notice that at the bootom of the right menu
(where tags are) there is a "pencil" icon tooltip "tools", that have
most if not all editing tools

hope this help

As far as I remember all edit tools are under Tools in toolbar not in menubar.
But regardless, have you tried my workaround?

1. Press Ctrl + M in Editors (it probably won't work)
2. Press Ctrl + L to open Light table
3. In light table press Ctrl + M to show/hide menubar. (It should work)
4. Return to the editor window and press Ctrl + M to show/hide menubar. (It should work now)

AppImage has option from CLI :

[gilles@localhost Downloads]$ ./digikam-5.5.0-01-x86-64.appimage help
-- digiKam AppImage Bundle
-- Use 'help' as CLI argument to know all available options
digiKam AppImage bundle CLI options:
without option     : run digiKam.
<showfoto>         : run Showfoto instead digiKam.
<debug>            : run digiKam into GDB.
<debug> <showfoto> : run Showfoto into GDB.
<help>             : show this help.
[gilles@localhost Downloads]$

When launched in ubuntu / appimage, the menu bar displayed is always the main windows one, so I suppose that the problem is the fact that the editor is a daughter windows, not the

digiKam image editor (not showfoto) is also a stand alone window, as Light table and Batch Queue manager.

Re: Missing menus

Hi Andrey,

Much as I love Digikam, it is rather disappointing, but I cant change my system, on which so much of my workflow is based for my job, and this is more important than my hobby. I tried that and I wasted a lot of time, and quickly went back to Unity on 16.04.

Is still think this is a bug, but I understand that it is unlikely to be solved any time soon.  I think that if this can't be fixed I will have to go back to a version of Digikam from before this bug was introduced. Using shofoto from the command line doesn't really solve anything, I may as well just use Gimp, and just use Digikam as a glorified file manager and tag editor. The whole point of an integrated system is to have a very rapid workflow. Separate tools destroy that.

Thanks for all the suggestions though.

Regards
Derek

Derek

I guess one will have to compare the code for digiKam editor x.x (whichever version works for you) and digiKam 5.5 and try to understand where the issue is.

I just wanted to add that you can have multiple Desktop Environments on the same system and switch them on login. So you don't have to reinstall anything which means your work tools / files won't be touched.

I personally use darktable and RawTherapee for RAW developing and digiKam for all the rest.

Hi yes, I understand that one can do multiple desktops or multiple distros. But it is not compatible with my work. I do work and play interspersed because we are a global company, I often am on work stuff most working hours, and I am often editing photos while waiting for a conference call to start. Switching back and forth would just slow down the workflow, and it is the speed of workflow athat makes me love Digikam. Nothing else works as well. d

As far as I remember all edit tools are under Tools in toolbar not in
menubar.

In my virtualbox, using the Control key is not possible (at least not on unity), and anyway unity is pretty weird in virtualbox/ubuntu 16.10

so I can't help
may be the OP?

but if the editor could be launched as independent windows, I guess the problem would be solved

yes, it is see my previous message.
