Like it or not, Ubuntu is pretty common use. I have not had problems with any other software on it. Don't get me wrong, I love Digikam, it is my only photo management / workflow tool aside from some nautilus scripts, and I am happy to help get to the root of the problem while I use Version 4 meanwhile. I don't want to use anything else, so i will use the older version until there is a solution. It has to be something simple and silly! And thanks for EVERYTHING you guys do with Digikam. As an ordinary user, I really really really appreciate it. regards Derek On Sun, Feb 19, 2017 at 6:47 PM, Gilles Caulier <[hidden email]> wrote:

At home : - Centos 6.8 for AppImage build process (32/64 bits), into VirtualBox. In my office (i work in huge French Scientific research center, about Energy) : - Mageia 5.1 for desktop, compiler, front end applications. - CentOS 6.8 for servers. The KDE integration in Mageia is just the best that i know. In my office we have been forced to use Ubuntu to run specific drivers about high speed acquisition device. It have been a pain to install, to setup, to use (outside the driver installation which touch the arcanes of the system). Never talk to me about Ubuntu, it just a waste of time... I tested, OpenSuse. Not too bad at all... KDE is well integrated. Gilles Caulier 2017-02-19 17:51 GMT+01:00 Andrey Goreev <[hidden email]>:

Just a FYI, I tested the appimage on a virtual machine install of the latest Linux Mint, and it works fine, both the top menu and the one on the app menu are visible. While it should only be the top one, this is a far better result than no menu at all! regards Derek On Sun, Feb 19, 2017 at 7:01 PM, Gilles Caulier <[hidden email]> wrote:

You can't regret the fact that Ubuntu gave non-geeks like me a chance to enjoy using an open source OS though. Yes in some cases it works not the way the rest distributions do but we still need to respect it as a part of the community and should not ignore it. Here is a result of my testing (all tests in VMs, but Elementary also tested on old laptop): Ubuntu 16.10 Unity -- - Has the issue reported here so DK unusable Ubuntu 16.04 Unity -- Works as expected Ubuntu 16.10 Gnome --- Works as expected Ubuntu 16.10 KDE -- Works as expected Elementary OS Loki -- Works as expected Manjaro 17.0 KDE -- Works as expected Linuxmint 18.1 cinnamon -- Works as expected It would seem to be an issue with Ubuntu 16.10 Unity, rather than Ubuntu per se or Digikam per se. regards Derek On Tue, Feb 21, 2017 at 7:34 PM, Andrey Goreev <[hidden email]> wrote:

Menubar often disappears in my Mint KDE too.
Ctrl+M does not bring it back for some reason. But I found a work around: 1. Select any image in Album View 2. Press Ctrl + L (that will open Light Table) 3. In Light Table press Ctrl +M (menu bar will be back) 4. Close Light Table and Press Ctrl +M in Album View (menu bar will be back) It works that way but I have no idea why does the menubar disappears and why Ctrl+M does not work after that. I think there is a bug in digiKam and it has nothing to do with Unity. I am on KDE. I must apologies for this, but 50% of the issue is there in Ubuntu 16.04. I was so happy to be able to get back to managing and posting my photos that I didn't notice the issue. This may help diagnose the problem... which in my naive way of thinking has to be have something to do with Digikam interacting with the Unity menu. So there are two places the menubar can be: On the application window at the top, and on the topbar as per the Mac way. The first time I open the Digikam editor on Ubuntu 16.04, the menubar is present in both places. The second time I open it, it is only present on the Digikam editor window. It has disappeared from the top. I can still use it, but it is not the correct behaviour. Before I log it against Unity, is it appropriate to ask if it can be double checked in the DK code? Sorry if that is out of line, but I really want to get to the bottom of this. thanks Derek On Sat, Feb 25, 2017 at 3:45 PM, Gilles Caulier <[hidden email]> wrote:

Sorry to belabour this... but according to the Ubuntu Launchpad bug-tracking instructions Typically, what isn't supported is software from a PPA (Personal Package Archive), 3rd party packages, self-compiled software, etc. For more on supported Ubuntu repositories, please see here. If you are using unsupported software, it is best to file a bug in that program's bug tracker directly.I think if I report this but with Ubuntu, it will be ignored because the version is 'unsupported'. I am scared now that if Digikam updates via the PPA as I would wish, then my several years of developing a photography workflow for Digikam will be lost. So I have to be content with a semi-working version and remove the PPA. DK 5.4 works, but has the double menu, DK 5.5 appimage is totally broken even on Ubuntu 16.04. If I had money I would pay a bounty to have this fixed, but I am just a humble amateur photography user. What do I do? Is there anyone with more technical knowledge than me who can take a look at the code one more time in relation to Unity? Just a FYI, my photos are all 'open source' (CC:BY) or 'public domain' (CC:0), and thanks to being able to work fast and tag images with Digikam, I have 8 million views on Flickr, and many thousands of uses under those licenses. It is heart rending to think of not using DK for this. I will do ANYTHING I can from my end to help and do my part to get this bug fixed. But it seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. Isn't this "just" a Unity problem? What about installing an other desktop environment to use with digikam as a workaround? Either login in using it only the times you use digikam and other times login with Unity if you really love it. Not the best solution but if it bothers you then it's one solution for the time being. Just a thought... /Philip On 2 Mar 2017 07:38, "Derek Keats" <[hidden email]> wrote:

This is my work machine. I use the same machine for work and photography, and doing that would kill my workflow. I tried that already, and gave up on it. It just doesn't work the way I do. Thanks for the suggestion though. It is JUST a Unity problem, but it only happens with Digikam.
