I'm having a "silly" but frustrating problem. When I set up digikam I
set my collection folders under Settings - Configure digikam. I used the Collections menu there to set up the album folders. I have some folders for photos I take, and others for genealogy records. When I import images using my SD card DK adds the new folder to the collection fine. BUT when I download record images and manually make a folder in my dropbox folder and put the new images in there, DK is not updating the folder list in dropbox when I open DK. I can't figure out how to get it to find the new folders or images. Since I organize my document folders with many subfolders by topic/family it would be very hard to figure out what folders DK has not imported since I set it up. Going to Browse - Refresh does not show the newer folders. I thought of using Import - Folders and having it import my dropbox folder again, BUT it looks like it's copying all the folders and images into another place?? Or is it just bringing in links to the newer files and photos? Any other photo album/editor I've used before Picassa or Photo Shop Elements have always recognized when I opened it to check the marked folders for new images. I'm not understanding how to have DK do this. Hopefully there is an easy way to do this, I just can't find it. Digikam works on physical folders tree.
If your Dropbox folder (guessing as I've not used Dropbox with DK) is not included in the arborescence of one your collections, DK will have no way to detect new pictures. So either you set up an additional collection from your Dropbox folder or subfolder; or you keep Dropbox separate from DK and have to import/copy your pictures in a local folder that is already recognized by Digikam. The dropbox IS a folder on my hard drive and it's set as a root folder
in the collections. However I've noticed that when I make a new folder in it and add document images in that folder, when I open DK the new folders and images are not there. Since I have multiple folders and subfolders in my dropbox account and have been adding to it for months, it will be very difficult to figure out what folders are not in DK. This should be thought of as any other folder ie. photos or pictures. If you add a new subfolder to it, should DK not recognize you've done that and add it when you start the program? Somewhere in the digikam configuration there is an option to decide if it should check for new images at startup. Is that enabled?

There is an option in the configuration menu (last tab, named "Divers" in french) for Digikam to search new elements automatically every time you lauch the program; but it slows down the starting process, and I think users usually don't activate this option. Thank you I found it and it was already
checked. I uncheck it restarted, then checked it again, restarted
and it still doesn't find the new folders. :(

Thanks Volker, I tried that but it
didn't change anything, I already had it checked.
I've also gone to Tools - Scan for New Images. Selecting that opens a pop up box, it looks like it quickly goes to 39% then stops and closes. Any ideas why it might not be completing the scan? Thanks, Kim On 01/18/2013 11:51 AM, Volker Henn wrote:

I was looking in DK and see I'm running version 2.5 that is in the
package manager. This looks like it's a bit out dated. Is there a ppa to get the newer stable version on? I'm running Bodhi 2.2.0 that is built off Ubuntu 12.04. Perhaps updating will solve the collections issue? Dropbox is an online back up site (dropbox.com), they have both free and
paid options. You can either upload your files to it for a backup or install their app that puts a folder called dropbox on your hard drive. Any files you put in that are uploaded to your dropbox account. Their app keeps your hard drive folder and your account on their website in sync. If you change a file it uploads the newest copy to their server when you have closed that file. So the photos are physically on my hard drive at all times. I have my dropbox folder set up as it's own collection in DK. I was trying to figure out how to get a newer version of DK, I found Philip's ppa https://launchpad.net/~philip5/+archive/extra Installed that and tried to update DK. It ended up removing DK, then would not let it reinstall stating dependency issues. Although it installed and changed a ton of stuff on my pc. I ended up having to purge that ppa and then reinstall DK from the standard ppa. For some reason instead of having the version 2.5 I had now I'm down to version 2.4.1. I don't get it, this just isn't my day! LOL I don't remember having installed DK from anywhere but the stock repo before so I don't know why my version is now older. Is there an "easy" way I can install the latest stable version of DK? I've been using linux for almost a year now, but still consider myself a newbie. Oh and even with going down a version, it still looks like it stops about 39% into scanning for new images. You're way behind on versioning...
With Fedora, I'm on Digikam 2.9.0 from the ordinary repos. And 3.0.0 is in RC stage. Yes I'm realizing that now, but I can't figure out how to get the 2.9
installed. The only one in the package manager (ubuntu 12.04) is 2.4.1. I don't understand why it is so far behind the current version.... I'm searching for another way to install it, but I'm not having much luck so far. :( Kim On 01/18/2013 02:51 PM, Marie-Noëlle Augendre wrote: > You're way behind on versioning... > With Fedora, I'm on Digikam 2.9.0 from the ordinary repos. You need ro look for Philip Johnson's ppa. I think you will also nees jis extras ppa to get all correct libraries. I don't use ubuntu so unfortunately can't give you exaxt details On 18 Jan 2013 20:38, "Kim" <[hidden email]> wrote:

Do you use dropbox across multiple machines or just as a backup service for a single machine? umm. I installed dropbox on my computer, and DK see files normally. With DK open, if i copy files into the dropbox/photos directory on my local machine, DK picks up the changes straightaway. your distribution runs enlightenment as an environment, correct? I wonder if there are some programs that are not running that are necessary for monitoring files. I know KDE has a million programs needed for communication between programs. I would test by installing and running KDE, then try to use DK w/ dropbox within KDE, perhaps file monitoring will work then. I could be totally off-base on this. Since i wasn't able to reproduce your problem, i'm only guessing at a solution. Although you do see new files in other folders appear in DK that are not in dropbox, right? It is puzzling. > > Is there an "easy" way I can install the latest stable version of DK? > I've been using linux for almost a year now, but still consider myself a > newbie. > i don't believe i can be much help here, i am not familiar with your distro, and i run DK from its source code. which means i am running a recent version of digikam (not v2.4) so its possible that a bug has been squashed relating to this behavior. > Oh and even with going down a version, it still looks like it stops > about 39% into scanning for new images. > ugh, i guess it isn't your day. sorry we can't be more helpful. cheers, - b _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

I tried Philips "extra" ppa, but I couldn't get it to install DK 2.9.
I found this on Ask Ubuntu http://askubuntu.com/questions/191765/dependancies-not-met-while-instaling-digikam-2-9 I installed the last ppa suggested http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu That updated a crazy amount of things on my pc, and upgraded me to DK 2.8. Still trying for 2.9!! LOL Anyway after doing this I opened DK again, it still does not find the newer folders/files. Telling it to scan for new images still stops at 39%. Could it be a database problem? Kim On 01/18/2013 03:47 PM, Larry wrote: > > You need ro look for Philip Johnson's ppa. I think you will also nees > jis extras ppa to get all correct libraries. Ubuntu is always very late to produce new versions. That's why I switched for Fedora several years ago, especially to get more quickly new versions for Digikam and Scribus at the time, and also Darktable nowadays.
Ubuntu is too huge a machine... Marie-Noëlle 2013/1/18 Kim <[hidden email]> Yes I'm realizing that now, but I can't figure out how to get the 2.9 installed.
