switching ubuntu to fedora

Rinus
Hi list,

Got just my computer lo live again after update ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10
disaster by going back to 11.04 and installed dk from philipś PPA.

today, two days later (or was it one) I did a regular update, I think it
went from kde 4.7.1 to 4.7.2. Now dk doesn´t start anymore.

I´m getting so tired of it. Will I be better of switsching to Fedora?

and if I do, how bad will it be with all the commands I learned last 6
months? Have I to start over again learrning or will it be pretty much
the same thing?

Thanks for opinions!

Rinus

I'm not Fedora user, but I'm sure fedora has different package manager from Ubuntu, so installing applications and handling repositories is going the main difference. The rest of the things should be pretty much the same.

Re: switching ubuntu to fedora

Ross McDonald-2
Hi,
I just switched yesterday from Linux Mint 10 to fedora 16 rc. My digikam was 1.9 and 2.2 is available in the f16 repository. I've not had a chance to explore it fully yet. I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers
Ross

Yes, it is different, but not so much you can't switch easily from one to the other.
Additionally, Fedora's versions are more frequent than Ubuntu's, and software upgrades can often be obtained from "testing" repositories.
Though, at the moment, only Digikam 1.9 can run with Fedora 15 ... because of the KDE version, I think; but Fedora 16 is announced for pretty soon, the beginning of November, I think.

As for myself, I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora more than a year ago, and I have not regretted it once. I don't know about the english forum; but the french one is very dynamic and helpful.

FireFly
I'm going to still vote for Arch Linux, overall it's been the best OS that I've tried, love the rolling release concept, love the fact that things just work, and that I can choose to install the software that I want (without having to uninstall a bunch of extras first)

Thanks for all the responses. The answer to the main question, ¨will I
be better off¨ is still not convincingly set. For as long as it takes
everything is working. I hope to maintain this status quo for a while.
best,

Hi Rinus

You will never get an answer to your main question "will you be better
switching to fedora". I personally tried ubuntu a few years ago and
never was satisfied the way they do things. But I must confess that I
came from Mandrake/Mandriva and this originally was a spin off from
redhat. To me fedora was easier than all the ubuntu way.

But in general: If you only use the packageKit programs to install and
maintain software there will be almost no difference. Some
configuration files are named different and you have to search them in
different places (network configuration files for example) but this is
easy to learn.

The main difference is that fedora use Gnome instead of unity by
default. If you use KDE fedora is better than ubuntu (imho). And the
kde fedora mailing list is very good.

Martin
