selecting photos

Krister Nielsen
I want to select some photos, but every time I *do* anything, the
selection is cleared. If I want to take a closer look at a photo, to
see if I want to select it as well, and click on it, the selected
photos are cleared. I cannot select across multiple albums either, as
changing album also causes the selection list to be cleared.

I suspect I'm being an idiot, but I've spent too many hours now to care...

Is there any way to accomplish what I want?

No. As in a file-manager changing the folder or opening an image in an
embedded viewer will clear the selection. In order to not have to preview the
images you can increase the thumbnail size via the slider at the bottom right
of the digikam window.

What you could do is tag your images with e.g. "Selection1" and then use
digikam to sort by tag. That way you will have all the "Selection1" images in
a group.

To which I feel compelled to point out that a photo organizer like
digiKam is in no way a file-manager, so why should it mimic this
particular file-manager trait?

It's worth noting that digiKam doesn't behave at all like
Dolphin/Konquerer in any number of other ways, including preselecting
the first entry upon opening a folder. That's perfectly logical in a
photo-organizer, but not what one would want in a file-manager.

It seems counter-productive to attempt to force a single set of usage
patterns upon two completely disparate applications. The reasoning in
software design should always be along the lines of "what's best for
the user". Certainly, there are times when the overriding argument is
that the user expects a certain behavior to follow a given action and
that this expectation is so in-grained that even though it may not
necessarily be optimal on its own, the total user experience is
improved by adhering to the sub-optimal behavior.

In this case, however, I would strongly argue that the user does not
necessarily expect this behavior and that changing it would provide
numerous improvements without ANY negative side effects.

I can accept this argument. Previewing need not clear the selection. It may be
difficult to implement because it is default behavior probably implemented
deeply inside Qt.

How would you want to make this usable? You would have invisibly selected
items. You can switch to any album, to any tag, any search. Should all
previously selected items stay selected? If you clear the current selection,
should all selections be cleared? This can't work.

So what's the usecase? I dont mean "I want to select images", but for what
purpose do you want to create a temporary selection (as opposed to a permanent
group, which is tagging)?

My "problem" is quite simply that one of the things that I (and the
wife) do most often with a photo organizer is select images (sometimes
from multiple albums) and email them to friends / family. I really
don't want to have to tag images when doing this (and getting the wife
to do so would be... unrealistic).

Although probably a lot more complex to implement, the solution to
both these problems *seems* obvious: Have the selected photos shown
(in small thumbnails) e.g. along the bottom. Then the user could
separately interact with this "stack" of photos, tag them, flip them
on the light board, whatever.
