DigiKam uses screen real estate very inefficiently.
The left side-bar, whether it is album view, date/time view, or tags view all use large icons which means there is excess whitespace between each line. Each of these should use a standard tree-view like Konqueror, and either leave out the icon (seldom useful), or use a much smaller icon. The same issue applies to the tag editing or filter modes in the right side-bar. The far left column used to switch between album, data/time, tags, and searches could be done more space efficiently by using a "tab" bar on top. This is also a more common interface so it might be more user-friendly. Or the Firefox Sidebar-selection UI could be used. I also agree with BugZilla #102500 (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102500) that album view has too much whitespace and in general is not space efficient. -- --Per Bothner [hidden email] http://per.bothner.com/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
Hi Per,
which version of digikam are you using? With recent versions you can adjust the icon size. Concerning http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=102500 different variants have been discussed, but no conclusion was made as far as I understand things; maybe you could revive that topic there by making a proposal, which takes the status of the discussion into account? Which is confusing because this blog posting (http://www.digikam.org/?q=node/218) says 0.9.2 can adjust the thumbs and icons sizes, but the screenshot does not match what I see. In any case, I can't try anything until this is resolved: http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-users/2007-July/003927.html I'm assuming I can tweak some config file - but of course it's a bug if you can use the UI to get into a state you can only recover from by editing a config file. P.S. For now I'm reading this via the archives rather than being subscribed, so cc'ing me would be appreciated. -- --Per Bothner [hidden email] http://per.bothner.com/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
Ok, one problem is fixed - I found the setting for the
sidebar thumbnail image size and changed it to 16. I still can't change the album thumbnail image size (I'd like to make that larger). Even editing digikamrc (the ThumbnailSize setting) doesn't seem to work. I'll submit a bugzilla request to use a tabbed UI for the sidebars. -- --Per Bothner [hidden email] http://per.bothner.com/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

OTOH, the ThumbnailSize is in the [Camera Settings] part... _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

The setting I needed to change was 'Default Icon Size' for the photo thumbnails shown in the album view. Changing it to 160 gave me something reasonable. I couldn't find a UI way to change this, and the default of 96 is much too small. -- --Per Bothner [hidden email] http://per.bothner.com/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

There is a status-line with a slider to change the icon size (well, this one also disappears with the full-screen problem, but re-appears after CTRL-SHIFT-F twice). That UI isn't terribly obvious (though the tooltip helps). Worse, it's hard to precisely set the size. A common alternative is a widget to show the actual number along with up and down control, like what KColorChooser uses. I think that might be better. Still, the existing UI is tolerable enough, especially now that I know how to edit the digikamrc. -- --Per Bothner [hidden email] http://per.bothner.com/ _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
