Hi all
just a question , in the settings I see we can configure the option write to sidecars files are - write to item and XMP sidecar - write to sidecar XMP only - write to XMP sidecar for read-only item only I was then wondering what means "write to XMP sidecar for read-only item only" If I want to get metadata recorded in any file so it remains visible/readable when exporting the picture outside of digikam, which option should I use ? thanks and regards frederic |

For exported images (which can be written to by definition), if you want them to contain the metadata, you'd have to pick the first option ("write to both"). If you don't want the image files to contain metadata, pick "write to sidecar only" |

Hi, Read only file are video or RAW files where metadata can be read, but not write, at let with Exiv2 library used by digiKam. So using a sidecar file near the original file permit to play with metadata without to touch RAW or Video. thanks all for your answer so I understand that "' - write to XMP sidecar for read-only item only" is enough if we want update in jpeg what is the impact/"risk" if trying to use the option "both" ? is it generating errors? (I set it from the past days and didn't see errors) regards

I believe it also is in reference to the fact that some versions of digiKam
will create a sidecar even for .jpg and .tif if you wish not to have data written into the .jpg file, or you can have both. The most recent version that I have has done away with this, but the choice is still listed. Most photo mgmt. software does not give the choice to create a file such as "file.jpg.xmp" because .jpeg and .tiff are designed to be written into. digiKam now seems to have followed this trend so this choice does not make sense anymore. It only makes sense now if you can write into a raw file which I am not sure you can do with digiKam. -- Sent from: http://digikam.1695700.n4.nabble.com/digikam-users-f1735189.html |
