[digiKam-users] What to do with faces I don't care about?

I'm face tagging my photos, what do I do with faces of people I don't care to tag?

The red X button says "if this is not a face, click to delete it"

The minus button says "reject this suggestion"

It's unclear how to tell digikam that, yeah, that's a face, but I don't care about it.

There are three possible states for a detected face (you can find the three
categories in the People panel):

Ignored
Unknown
Unconfirmed

Unconfirmed faces means that digikam has detected a faces and thinks to know
who is that person.
Unknown faces means that digikam has found faces but does not know who that
person is.

If you click the minus sign on Unconfirmed faces, they will move to Unknown.
If you click the minus sign on Unknown faces, they will move to Ignored.

In any case, if you click the red X at the top right, you will remove that
face from the picture.


So, in the case you expose, you first have to reject the suggestion, and
then, in Unknown faces, you have to Ignore that face.

Hi, Michael.

What version of Digikam?  If you're running a 7.2-RC, if you reject the suggestion, the face will be placed into the unknown virtual folder.  Once there, you can multi-select faces and select ignore.

Pre 7.2, you're best to upgrade to 7.2 to be honest.

Thanks Marc, Thanks Rob,

From a workflow perspective that makes a lot more sense now.

It would be nice if there were a way to go straight from Suggested to Ignore.

Digikam is (rightfully) picking up faces in the background in crowds, other people's kids from school events, things like that. Or pictures of friends' exes or something. It'd be great to be able just ignore them in one step. I am tagging by going into an existing tag, and looking through the suggested photos/faces. Right now, the Unknown pool has a lot of pictures I do care about, but haven't tagged yet. It seems like the current workflow increases the noise in the Unknown pool, since all I-don't-care people have to go from a Suggested match to Unknown before getting put in Ignored.

Still, 7.2-RC is very nice. Very usable, pretty stable, and tagging faces is pretty addicting. Only 60,000 more photos to go.

Also, if you remove the face from a photo, will it return if you re-scan for faces? Or is it marked as a "non-face" in some way?

I fully agree with Michael's post. I am in exactly the same situation
with my Unknown pool consisting of some 25k faces. Whenever I run
recognition, I see plenty of faces or "faces" in Unconfirmed that I want
to be ignored. But currently I see no easy way to do that. If I mark
them as rejected, then they go back into Unknown where due to the sheer
mass of faces, I cannot locate the ones I just wanted to ignore.
Removing the face by clicking on the top-right corner symbol brings the
faces back the next time I scan with "Merge Results".

The use-case of face detecting/recognizing a large pre-existing library
of photos seems fairly standard. Unless I am missing something, everyone
would be in the same position as Michael and I, having troubles to
ignore faces.

My suggestion: From an end-user's perspective, there seems little (if
any?) difference between deleting a face or marking as ignored. Hence
could we just have the top-right corner action always ignore a face, no
matter of whether we look at unknown or unconfirmed faces? The change in
behavior for the action despite no change in the icon has confused me
quite a bit anyway :)

Given that this has been brought up by several users, can we consider
work on this? Thanks!
