[digiKam-users] Update metadata for multiple photographs

Andy Struthers
I just started using digiKam (current version for Windows 10). Is it possible to edit metadata for multiple photos in a batch? e.g. to organize my backlog of digitised 35mm negatives I want to add location details to the relevant IPTC and XMP attributes. As many photos are taken in the same location I'd like to be able to enter the values once and have them written to the target attributes in all of the selected files. I know that tagging in digiKam works like that.

If I open the Edit Metadata tool with multiple photos selected it only applies edits to the the first of the selected files and I have to work through each selected photo one by one to add the same information.

I can't find anything in the documentation describing how to do what I want so I need to ask, does the software currently support updating of metadata for multiple files in a batch?

In all other respects digiKam is an excellent application for my needs (casual home user) and I'd like to carry on using it but with a few thousand photos to catalog, updating metadata one photo at a time isn't really feasible.

Sorry if this question has been asked before but trying to find anything in the mailing list archives isn't easy without a means of searching them.

Thanks for any help with this issue.

Andy

Hi, another user here.

Have you checked if the metadata you want to edit can be changed using the
Batch Queue Manager?

Hi Adny, I asked for a near identical issue, but for RAW photo files, and
finally it was not solved

Hi again,

I took the liberty of reporting a wish on the bugtracking system, proposing
a possible solution to edit the metadata of several photographs at the same
time.

You can find it here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=409990

Regarding the metadata edition of RAW files, I just tried it by activating
the "Read from sidecar files" and "Only write to XMP sidecar files for read
only items" in the settings, and it seems that the metadata is indeed
written to a sidecar, and digikam can read that information afterwards. I
does not seem to be possible to directly edit the RAW file, but that's
something I wouldn't do in the first place, just in case.

@woenx - thanks for your comments. I looked at using Batch Queue Manager for editing metadata for multiple images but it would be a bit long-winded to do it that way. I was hoping for an approach much like the bug/wish report you kindly submitted. Looking at that report it seems (as I suspected) that this a fairly long-standing item on the wish-list as there are duplicates dating from a while back. If I knew how to code I'd volunteer to work on the feature but I'm totally non-technical I'm afraid. Looks like I'll have to search out another tool for this in the meantime.

would be nice if you tell us the tool, in case you find something appropriated
