[digiKam-users] People thumbnail not zoomed to face?

AdamWu
I was using face recognition in version 5.x, and remembered the thumbnails in
the "People" view zooms and centers to the face.

I recently upgraded to 6.2.0, and decided to rebuild the whole database. But
after doing so, I found that the thumbnails in the "People" view are exactly
the same as the normal thumbnails -- the faces are no zoomed or centered
anymore.

Maybe some configurations have changed in the 6.2.0?
Could someone shed some light on me? Thanks very much!

Are you sure it has not always been like that? I remember it was suggested as
an improvement for the whole face recognition function, because the whole
picture, and not only the face, was used as a People thumbnail. I thought
there was a bug report about this specific issue, but I can't find it now.

In any case, I believe that when a new person is added, a face thumbnail
should be added automatically (which the user can change if she/he wishes).

I am running 6.2.0.  The 'People' view thumbnails are the same as
previous versions, i.e. a thumbnail of the face, not the whole picture.
I just looked at a few and it seems that the thumbnail is a bit bigger
than the box around the face, and I think there may be a minimum size.

Re: People thumbnail not zoomed to face?

AdamWu
I removed all databases and rebuilt again, and found a possible pattern: It
seems the thumbnail view is "confused" between the picture thumbnail and the
face thumbnail.

That is, the thumbnail view only displays *either* the picture thumbnail,
*or* the face thumbnail.

In my previous attempt, I used maintenance tool to rebuild thumbnail first,
then detect face, therefore the picture thumbnail is generated first, so all
face thumbnails just use the picture thumbnail instead.

In my current attempt, after adding albums, I immediately did detect face,
then all face thumbnail are correct (zoomed and centered). But when I switch
to the Albums view, funny thing happen -- some of the picture thumbnails
became replaced with the face thumbnail!

But the mysterious things is that, not all picture suffered the problem.

Anyone else can reproduce my problem? I am using sqlite3 database.

Oh, ok, I was thinking about a different issue (the thumbnail in the tree
view, not in the miniature view). So, no, I never experienced the problem
you mention. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I think I have found a reliable reproduce of the problem. :D

Apparently the critical step is, when adding albums, if "Collections on
Network Shares" is used, then the thumbnail problem appears. If instead,
"Local Collections" is used on a mapped drive of the same network share,
then no thumbnail problem.

I am using Windows, not sure similar problem will happen on Linux for samba
shares (mounted vs. network).

Hello,

I can confirm that the problem is related to "Collections on Network
Shares". DigiKam version 6.4.0 shows the same behaviour under Linux (Samba
share mounted locally). If the photo album is on the locally mounted
directory and is set as "Local Collections" in DigiKam, the face thumbnails
will be displayed correctly.

However, if it is set as "Collections on Network Shares", both problems will
occur. Face thumbnails sometimes show the whole picture and normal
thumbnails show only one face in the photo.

Confirming this issue exists on 7.2.0 even when not using the "Collections on
Network Shares" functionality.

The problem has been fixed in digiKam-7.2.0, it also only occurred with UNC file paths. I suspect you are on Windows. A short test with different types of images showed no problems. Which image type does the problem occur with? Otherwise we need a DebugView log as described here:
