[digiKam-users] Multiple simultaneous keyword entry

Thank you for your response to my keywords question.

It's clear I didn't state that question clearly.

I am not talking about existing tags or keywords, so I can't select from an existing list or import from some other application.

As I examine each image, I decide on keywords for that image and those keywords belong to that image and only that image.  For example, if the image contains people, I will enter the names of the people as keywords so that I can search for those names at some later time.

I sometimes will also enter the location as a keyword, even though the image GPS data provides that information and even though there is a location field in the IPTC data.

I use the digiKam Edit Metadata window, not from the command line, and, to reiterate, the keywords are unique to each image and keyword entry is a time consuming task when done so one at a time for many images.

That's why I am trying to determine if there is a way to enter multiple keywords simultaneously in digiKam.  If you happen to be familiar with Adobe Bridge, Bridge allows this process when the keywords are separated by commas.

for one image and only one

if you enter them ass tags, the tg database will soon be filled by
unwanted ones...

so may be it's enough to enter them in description field?

Ah, OK. Is this the idea? With one or more photos selected in the photo pane, click on the Captions tab on the right hand pane, select Tags at the top, select (check) the tags you want. Apply. (screenshot attached if allowed).

 

Adobe Bridge, would be perfect for me if only it had the mapping capability of digiKam.

I am not entirely sure of what you mean. Just add tags to pictures, and more
than one, right? I have not used Adobe Bridge extensively, so I am not sure
how it works there...

Just go to the Captions panel at the right, Tag tab, and you can just write
the tags you want for the selected picture in the text field at the top.
Press enter after writing each tag. Click on "Apply" when you are done.

I don't think it can be easier than that. Either that, i am missing
something here.

Indeed, Captions seems more adapted to OP's use case (unless he also needs to
add a title and caption to each image). Searching on terms in these fields
works. And entering the terms can be done from the main view, so a series of
images can be handled with almost only using the keyboard (PgDn to go to next
image, cursor stays in the last field used, the image metadata are updated
automatically when you switch to another image).

But it is an abuse of the captions field, so might not work nicely with
external programs (or agencies using the images).

Keyword use in Digikam seems to be more geared towards the use of restricted
vocabularies, organised in a tree structure. In such systems, the keywords are
re-used rather often, and used to find groups of related images, not one exact
image... In other words, you select appropriate keywords from an existing list
(and only add a keyword when absolutely necessary, if allowed to do so).

I am trying to avoid the "Press enter after each tag."

I want to enter up to 6 keywords (maybe more) all at once, with only one press of the Enter key (or equivalent), and not have to press the Enter key to enter each keyword.

Why?

Because if I have several hundred images and up to 6 keywords (or more) per image, entering all those keywords one at a time consumes a significant amount of time.

Entering multiple keywords at once and having digiKam recognize them as individual keywords would be a significant reduction in image processing workload.

Based on the responses so far, my tentative conclusion is that digiKam does not have that capability.

But maybe I am wrong, and I am missing something.  If so, please let me know.  Or confirm my conclusion that digiKam does not have the capability I want.

AFAIK, you are correct. It looks like Digikam won't meet your requirements.

what is the difference between entering a "," and entering a "CR"?? same
number of keypress

or maybe you want to do a copy/paste from an other app?

I think that you are missing the point.

He was using something else and he is trying to replicate the same
thing in DK instead of adapting to DK to end up with similar results.

it's as fast as typing a space or a comma!!

and many of us here have several thousand images on digikam and type
much more than 2000 entries (not to say it's pleasant)

I understand that

if the question was "is it possible to type multiple tags separated by
comas", the answer is no.

But I have the feeling the OP want to use some tag list from an other
app, like excel. If so, it's possible to export fields with whatever
separator one needs

but I dunno if this kind of copy/paste will works in digikam

Hey, I just checked. You CAN actually enter a list of keywords separated by
commas.

Like: keyword1, keyword2, keyword3, keyword4.

I just tried it and it works. And they appear as separate keywords.

Ok, in the main interface there's a panel on the right that is called
"Captions". If you open it you'll see that it contains three tabs, the one
in the middle being "Tags". In that tab, you will see a list of all the
keywords in the database (there's a button below to hide the unused keywords
in the picture selection), and on top of that, a text field where you can
write the name of new keywords.

Just write your keywords there, separated by commas, press enter, and click
Apply.
