[digiKam-users] Export to remote storage

digikam-2
DK6b3: 17-Nov-2018 appimage

I'm trying to copy files (.cr2/canon) to a drive.

1. Select the images
2. Export > Export to remote storage
3. Select export directory
4. Error

Works here without a problem. The fact is that this tool only works in a KF5
Plasma desktop because it uses KIO. That will not change until we port it to a
pure Qt application. Or you try to find out which packages and services you
need to install and start for KIO to do his work...

One more note to KIO. It really is a powerful package under Plasma, it allows
to send files to different places or network drives. And I'm glad it exists.
But we have to accept that under Windows, MacOS or not Plasma Desktops
(Ubuntu, Gnome etc.) it is not or probably difficult to install.

I'm not under plasma/kde. I use xfce on Manjaro.

But I was under the impression that the appimage contained all the
KDE "stuff".

Re: Export to remote storage

Gilles Caulier-4
Hi,

not all KDE, only the dependencies that do not introduce the big puzzle of unsolvable run-times, as... KIO.

The libraries dependencies are there, but for the rest, it's just impossible to bundle. I tried, and i lost 3 weeks of work to try to understand without success.

This is why, we left step by step all KDE dependencies. It's become too complex for a big project as digiKam. We need simplicity, and if Qt5 is enough to do the job, KDE API are dropped in favor of Qt.

For the KIO stuff, the tool need to be simplified and ported to pure Qt5. We have reports in bugzilla about this topic.

Best

Gilles Caulier

Re: Export to remote storage

In that case, is it possible to get just a text/ascii list of the
files selected or found by the search, then I can quickly make a
small bash script to copy them into whatever destination...

Thanks

Then looks like you have to either install KIO or export via a script / command line.

I kind of already do that. I have my base /photos/ and then I have an
album /photos/xfers, then in bash I move the photos to where I need.

The problem is the less than fully competent operator that forgets to
either move the files and does a copy and then forgets... That why i
was trying to do it within DK.

Maybe it is worth to give Plasma desktop a second chance.  Plasma is pretty light nowadays. Kubuntu 18.04 minimal install, KDE Neon are very light so are any KDE distros without Kontact Suite, akonadi, etc.

I'm looking at KDE but I first need a new video card, but I'm waiting
a very, very good sale...
