Hi,
Even if the port to Qt5 simplify the implementation and remove 80% of KDE dependencies, it's still 20% of KF5 frameworks, used with digiKam and this include Solid which is used to manage devices connection and more (USB card reader for ex).
Another point is your Nikon camera : this device is managed by Gphoto2. It's recognized, but not suitable. I can reproduce the dysfunction with DK 6.0.0 under my Macbook pro with a Sony PTP device (using also Gphoto2 driver).
So, for this last point, it can be a bug in Gphoto2 or a code to adjust in DK for MacOS in this case (there is a GPhoto2 interface in DK).
Note : the plugins simplification will be introduced in 6.0.0, not in 5.x

As far I understood with the move to Qt5 this would remove issues with
plugins and also importing from cameras. I am finding that I still
cannot import directly from my camera, it auto detects the camera but
does not see any files. I also cannot get it to recognise that a card
reader has been attached via usb. Can anyone advise ?
