digiKam 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 11.04 refuses to start

Dmitri Popov
Hello,

I'm running digiKam 2.2.0 from Philip's PPA on Ubuntu 11.04 (with kubuntu-desktop installed). All of a sudden, digiKam refuses to start. Whenever I try to launch the application, it throws the following error:

QSqlDatabasePrivate::removeDatabase: connection 'ConnectionTest' is still in use, all queries will cease to work.
digikam: symbol lookup error: digikam: undefined symbol: _ZN4KIPI21ImageCollectionSharedD2Ev

I googled the problem, and it seems that the issue can be caused by a variety of reasons. I tried different suggestions, but nothing worked.

Thanks,
Dmitri

All of a sudden?
Does that mean that you did installed something else in the meantime and
did not a system update?

Try forcing version downgrade for libkipi from 4.6.5 to 4.6.2 (Philip
Johnsson's PPA) in Synaptic

Re: digiKam 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 11.04 refuses to start

Philip Johnsson

I'm away for the weekend but will resolve this for people who use the unsupported/proposed KDE 4.6.5 packages from Ubuntu when I get back.

Until then you have to resolve this with a down grade like suggested.

Just checking my mail with my smart phone.

Digikam 2.2.0 was running fine on Kubuntu 11.04 until I let KDE update,
now Digikam won't start and it looks like libkipi was updated to 4.6.5.
How do I get back to 4.6.2.  Synaptic only shows 4.6.5.  Which of
Philip's PPA's do I need?  Just using "extra" now.

TIA,
Clair

I use also the "extra" PPA, but when I select "force version" (or
similar, -> Ctrl-E) in Synaptic, I get the option for a downgrade to
4.6.2, and one is the original ubuntu package.
Actually, I had the upgrade to KDE 4.6.5 last night, and after that
digikam wouldn't start. But the downgrade of libkipi was easy and now
digikam 2.2 starts up fine again.

Thanks Martin, that fixed it for me.

Philip : DigiKam on Ubuntu

Willem Ferguson
In reply to this post by Philip Johnsson
Hallo Philip,

There is lots of discussion about DK and its interaction with KDE. What
I am not clear about is how much of this relates to problems at the
bleeding edge and how much of this relates to fundamental design issues
that (ultimately) leads to stable software. It is clear that DK is
evolving quite rapidly and that dependencies take time to settle.

Is there clear documentation about the dependencies of the different
versions of DK, starting as far back as 1.4?

Kind regards,
Willem Ferguson

Hello, I am running kubuntu 11.04 and installed digikam from the ppa
repository and got the same two messages; except that I do not find a second
libkipi in synaptic.  All I have is libkipi8 version 4.6.5 from the kubuntu
repository.  The ppa source is listed as LP-PPA-philip5-extra/natty which I
presume is correct, but it does not have a libkipi.

thanks

Re: Philip : DigiKam on Ubuntu

Philip Johnsson
In reply to this post by Willem Ferguson
Hi there

I don't know if there is a documented schedule with any dependency
overview for different versions of the Digikam history of releases. I
don't find it likely that anyone have bothered to make one. You can
find in the source code for each release what is needed to build. What
is needed to build is NOT what is later on needed to use the binaries
compiled from a build as you will need more or less the same libraries
installed on your system that Digikam (or any other software for that
matter) it was built against. What matters is the API versions of
different libraries and the installed library names for linking. When
the API get new or changed functions then software won't work (break)
and version name of the actual file or the linkage against the
libraries will break.

I got back home this evening and haven't had time to read the debate yet.

/Philip
