compatible galery

jdd@dodin.org
Hello :-)

I don't like public galleries, because I don't trust them to respect
privacy.

So I build my galleries with Digikam export
(http://dodin.org/wiki/index.php?n=Photo.GaleriesPhoto)

However I miss the possibility to comment the images online (for
example to allow my sister to add memories) and the ability to see the
photos as a slideshow online (I have a total of 20.000 photos online),
for example by categories.

The PHP photogalleries I found are not very good as retreiveing
already loaded photos. I neither like mysql (as I always have had
problems backing up databases)

do you have any idea?

notice simpleviewer is now 2.0 and don't seems to work anymore with
digikam, and is limited to 50 images on one gallery, too small for me :-(

thanks
jdd

You could try Piwigo : it uses MySQL, but it works (I think there is a
backup plugin available), and the community is great :

I'm trying it on an other server, but my provider takes ages to make
the mysql work :-(

I used mysql in the past, but often notice it's ovekill, even for
20.000 images and is very difficult to restore after a backup

of course I can do if I don't find any other thing

thanks

There is also piwigo.com if you feel like it; that would solve both
the host and the backup problem.
I think the accounts are free during the beta-test period.

I will get a look, but I have a full server of my own on the net, so I
like better use it :-)

I also wonder what will be the security options on this site: I know,
for example, that picasa web gallery have nearly no security (images
are nearly open to anybody on the web) and claim rights on any images
uploaded on it's site wich I think thrilling :-(

Re: compatible galery

Ask the team. I know for sure the author of Piwigo started it a few
years to manage his family pictures, and he is very concerned about
privacy; and there are several professional photographs that are very
protective of their own gallery.

As for your server ... does it work properly to do what you want, ot not?   ;)

have you looked at gallery2 or is this the one you think it's not very good?

I sometimes use gallery2 (http://www.daniel-bauer.com/gallery2), some for
puiblic galleries - everybody who knows the URL can see the photos - and
sometimes private galleries which are only visible to registered users.

You can play with designs (I just used the standard one, because this part is
of no importance to me), you can comment on galleries or single photos (and as
admin manage who and how comments can be added or seen), you can show exif
data, you can manage the rights in a easy way. You can upload photos galleries
as zip-files, give or not give selected other people the rights to upload too,
you can even set how google sees (or not sees) the info.

I think you can also use slide shows.

I just use it when I fastly want to uplad some photos or to show a model or a
client the photos in a private gallery without the need of programming
anything myself, but I havn't gone deeper into to matter. However I am quite
impressed by the admin possibilities, although I don't use many of them...

Its open source and free. But if you like it? It's a matter of taste :-)

regards

Daniel

I'm new to both Linux and Digikam, but I've been using PhpWebGallery
(former Piwigo) for more than 3 years here:

Yes, I know of many php galleries. However I tried to find one without
mysql (there are some) and that I could make use of my previously
uploaded photos (this is much more dificult). "phormer" looked as a
good candidate - but there is very little support and I couldn't make
use of already uploaded photos.

If I remove the no mysql limit, there are many solutions

Just a note about simpleviewer: I found back in my archives sw 1.9, it
works quite well for What I need and is *not* limited to 50 photos as
sw 2 is!

thanks

Re: compatible galery

Humm... Quite difficult to manage a great number of pics and have nice
functionalities (categories, tags, comments, etc.) without a DB
