colour profile trouble with Raw

Sebastian Kraft-4
Hi,

I have some problems getting 16bit raw editing running.
As I read I have to setup colour management to edit RAW files with 16bit.
I took the SRGB profile from bibblelite and set it as my working profile.
As input profile I tried several profiles but colors are very bad.
Unfortunately it seems that there exists no official profile for Penatx
istDL2. What can I do to get the advantages of 16bit editing with digikam?

When I open the raw file in 8bit mode things like adjusting tone curves are
done with 8 bit, right? so I don't get the advantage of more different tone
values when I open with 8 bit mode?

regards,
sebastian

The Pentax ISDL color profile is here :

sure. and in 16 bits with 16 bits color depth.

Look into the histogram and apply a contrast correction in 8 bits and
in 16 bits. Look like the histogram include holes and not the 16 bits
!!!

You can seen a lot of comparisons in the web against RAW (in 12 bits
in fact actually) and JPEG (always in 8 bits) :

http://www.popphoto.com/howto/2196/jpeg-vs-raw-the-advantages-and-disadvantages-explained.html

In 16 bits color depth, you need to use color management to import
properly the RAW image using the right ICC camera color profile,
because the image is imported in Linear mode by dcraw. There are a lot
of discussions into the ML about this subject. Look into the
archive...

There is a profile for istDS. The istDS is nearly the same as the istDL(2)
but the image converted using this color profile has wrong colors.

When I convert it with Bibble, or ufraw it is ok

Mhm... more precise: the colors are not completely wrong. It's just
everything a bit to red compared with the results I get from all the other
raw converters.

Is there a possibility to get a profile exactly for the istDL2? The raw
converter from pentax includes no profiles.

icc Pentax camera profiles from BibblePro don't work ?

They are quite good. But the output is still a bit different from the
original bibble output. Colors aren't as intensive and the whole picture
has a more grey look. It's not much difference, but it can easily be seen
by a/b comparison. The output of digicam isn't as brilliant(?) as the
bibble one.(all modifications in bibble turned off)

If you are interested I will upload some samples to my webspace. But OK...
these differences can be ignored... nobody will know if bibble or dcraw
produces the exact and right colors...

All in all color management is a complicated topic for beginners. The first
mistake I made in the beginning was to compare the preview or 8bit tif from
digicam without color management with the 16bit tif(with CM). I didn't know
that there can be so much difference beetween using color management and
not using it when I "only" convert from RAW to TIFF.

Would be good if there are some more explanations and infos about how to set
up colormanagement and about the basics behind it on the digikam website
(or just a link to some good sites). Also some example pictures that show
how different, or wrong profiles affect the output can help new users...

Conclusion: best results with most pictures from istDL2
        input profile: pentax1.icm
        output profile: srgb.icm from bibble

One little question left: Is there any difference if I take a sRGB profile
from bibble or anywhere else? If I understood everything right there
shouldn't be any differences, but I'm not 100% sure...

Thanks for your help!

hadn't found this very informative page... so...then my suggestion would be
to link to it from somewhere like Documentation/FAQ/Support. Just a place
where people look for information when they need help. Awards&Reviews is a
bit misleading... ;)

Anyway. good stuff. I take deeper look into it later
