I use the open source program Piwigo and to create and host my own galleries. I currently have 6 of them, that you can see from the links "Mes sites Piwigo" of this page.
If you're not keen on managing or customizing your own gallery, you can also use piwigo.com I belong to the piwigo.org team, but have not been very active on the forum for the past few months. Thanks for the hint Marie-Noëlle.
Are you aware that in firefox the pictures fall half off the screen. Untill I discovered F11 (fullscreen) I had a look at your galleries before. Adventurous pictures. My wife and I kayak too. But do they fulfill the criteria:
"- not sponsored by people, animal or environment unfriendly
organisations.
- not sponsored by governmental are religious organisations - not meant to steal and sell my private information" Hijacking the thread, does anyone know
of any service that you can email an image to, and receive the URL of the image
back by email? Obviously it would only be suitable for small
files.
I'm thinking of a way to get around the problem of mailing
lists where people want to share images for discussion, but the list prohibits
attachments, and the majority of list members can't be bothered working out how
to upload an image somewhere. The images might need to be moderated, for obvious
reasons.

+1 for Piwigo. I use it to host a gallery on my own home server (http://dmpop.homelinux.com/piwigo/ if you are curious), and I like it a lot. It's fast, it supports comments and ratings, it can handle multiple users, and you can configure user privileges. Piwigo supports plugins, so you can add some nifty features to it, too.

I also was going to suggest hosting your own. I use the open-source
ginp gallery project, with extensive modifications of my own. I hadn't heard of piwigo; I'll have to check it out. Hi all,
Thanks for all the ideas. Piwigo looks ok but to get it on a free host is not so simple. I have tried 6 free web hosts. I could get only one to work. The bussiness is probably to get as much clicks and redirections as possible and not realy providing services. http://www.sleeplessregulus.byethost4.com/ This is the only one that partly works. I tried to build a website but the storage is ftp and a password is required to open a picture, so that´s not going to work too. To give you an idea what it´s going to be, one nice example picture is here, the password is ¨regulus¨. (no it is not to trick you in something and no the password is not the same as for my banking) (:-)) I definitly need more ideas to get something in the air. I was interested to see these three criteria:
> - not sponsored by people, animal or environment unfriendly organisations. > - not sponsored by governmental are religious organisations > - not meant to steal and sell my private information Perhaps it's common knowledge, but which of these do Picasa and Flickr not fulfil? I assume perhaps the last one, not sure about the others. -------------------------- Sent using BlackBerry ----- Original Message ----- From: sleepless <[hidden email]> To: digiKam - Home Manage your photographs as a professional with the power of open source <[hidden email]> Sent: Sat May 28 06:26:11 2011 Subject: [Digikam-users] Re: any recommendations on photo sharing service Hi all, Thanks for all the ideas. 2011/5/27 sleepless <[hidden email]> Hi all, I don't know whether it's available for you (in France only, maybe?), but quite many Piwigo users host their gallery on Free. However, there are some technical caveats: free hosts don't provide the same level and quality of service. That's why I've always advised to go for a paying host. In fact, it is not so expensive: for less than 25€ a year, I have mon own domain and as more much disk space and band width I need; in fact, all my domains are hosted in the same place (I just have to pay a registration fee about 8€/year each time I want to add a new domain). If you can read some french, see http://fr.piwigo.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=12336 (I'm registered as tosca in the Piwigo forum). Marie-Noëlle

Piwigo has several ways to upload pictures : ftp, html and the Digikam export plugin that works like a charm. I only use that one nowadays, though it has settings for only one gallery, so I have to change them each time I switch from one gallery to another.
