Why do I feel drawn to gambling even if I know I'm going to lose?

ron4

I have a question that has been bothering me for a long time. Why do I still continue to play even if I know my chances of winning are almost zero? Lottery, poker, betting - it's like a habit. Sometimes I win, but mostly I don't, and I still come back. Friends say it's just gambling. But I feel like it's deeper - as if process itself is more important than the result. Does anyone have a similar experience? Maybe this is how psychology works?

Sounds familiar! I once read an interesting article about this - https://travelmax.in/recommendations/the-psychology-of-chance-why-we-enjoy-games-of-luck/ . They explain in great detail that it's not just about winning. Our brain just gets high on uncertainty itself. It starts inventing patterns where there are none - like "yesterday I won because I was wearing a green sweater." It's also funny how everyone remembers not so much the victories as the moments when "it almost worked out." It evokes emotions, and emotions are what hook us.

And I also noticed that during the game it's like you switch off from everything - work, problems, thoughts. Just you and the game. Such a feeling of control over chaos. Perhaps this is what is most addictive. It's good if you realize this and don't let yourself "fly away" with your head.

It’s a common experience. Games are built on “variable rewards”—you don’t win every time, so the occasional payout teaches your brain to keep trying (intermittent reinforcement). Add in near-misses, the illusion of control (“I played well, so next time…”), arousal/anticipation, social rituals, and you get a loop where the process itself feels rewarding—even when the expected value is negative. If you want to keep it healthy, try: treating it strictly as paid entertainment with a fixed budget and time box, separating skill games from chance, logging triggers and outcomes, and inserting “speed bumps” (cool-off timers, spend limits, blocking apps). Swap in non-monetary versions (chess/roguelikes/fantasy leagues without buy-ins) to scratch the strategy itch. If gambling is creating stress, debt, or secrecy, that’s a sign to pause and talk with a professional or a national helpline—CBT for gambling can be very effective.
