Hi,
Tomorrow I will pack digiKam 0.8.1, but i have a problem. I recently added support for the media:/ kio which will make life of a lot of users better. Under 'camera' there is a new option browse media, which will hold the attached cameras. The problem is that this feature is not yet tested. I would love it if you could install it and test it, so i can decide if it should get it in the release or removed. To test: http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/0.8.0/digikam-0.8.1-rc2.tar.bz2 Or kubuntu dapper users: http://www.mpe.mpg.de/~ach/tmp/ (rc1, does not contain auto unmount, rc2 will arrive later tonight) Tom _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users smime.p7s (2K) Download Attachment |
I would love to test this, but my attempts to upgrade from HAL 0.4 to HAL 0.5 have failed. The reason why I failed is that I need HAL to call my home-made BASH scripts when new devices are added. With HAL 0.4 you can have it call a BASH script and add all device properties to its environment. As far as I could tell, HAL 0.5 no longer has this feature... If somebody can prove me wrong, I would love to upgrade to HAL 0.5 and test new DigiKam versions. Cheers, Dik Hi, Tomorrow I will pack digiKam 0.8.1, but i have a problem. On the other hand, I have digikam 0.8.0 installed, and it runs without problems. It's a rather fresh SuSE-10. So, what to do? Shall I install the old imlib2, or is the configure wrong? > To test: > http://digikam3rdparty.free.fr/0.8.0/digikam-0.8.1-rc2.tar.bz2 OK, here is my report based on KDE-3.5-SVN, HAL 4.8 and a cardreader on Linux 2.6.14. Cause 2.6.14 is _very_ slow when transferring data to a vfat partition that is synced mounted, I do not use this option and normally mount and unmount the device via the media kicker applet. When plug-in the cardreader I see an icon in kicker, the card is mounted and a konqi-window is open (my standard). When starting digiKam rc2 I see a new menu Camera->Browse Media and a list of all devices incl. NFS partitions and my cardreader option. Curious I choose my unmounted /boot partition which also has a square character at the end of the menu text. digikam tries to mount this partition (without having the rights), opens five download windows and hangs. Next try: Now I try to open another option of the media browse menu. But these do not show any reaction. I also discovered a new menu in the kicker media browser called "digiKam mount and download" which is BTW too technical and too long ;-) This opens a new instance of digiKam (which I do not like very much) and opens the download window. Downloading this way works fine. I did not found a unmount option in digikam but I could unmount via the kicker applet and this does not produce any bad influence to the running digiKam instance. So, as a reviewer I would vote to deactivate this option as default cause - its on the wrong place, this optiton has to be part of the camera config menu and an alternative to static mounting - it offers a choice which can make digiKam hang - the main media browse menu has here no working function - it too unfinished for a stable version If possible lets active it with a configure option. But it doesn't seem to be on my SuSE-DVD ;-( So I have to search for an appropriate package tomorrow. It does not work at all :-(.

I tried clicking with a mouted and also with a unmounted card but nothing happens and no message in konsole output. I attach a screenshot of my menu and want to point to the small square of the first option. This is the only option I can choose, but this leads digikam to hang. > > I also discovered a new menu in the kicker media browser called "digiKam > > mount and download" which is BTW too technical and too long ;-) This > > opens a new instance of digiKam (which I do not like very much) and opens > > the download window. If you choose mount & start digikam digikam will > see it was mounted before digikam started and will not umount it (of > course). OK, I see. But in the applet we then have two mount commands which looks strange. I think its better to hide this (un)mounting from the user in the menu. The applet option "Open in new window" does also mount on demand and is not called "mount and open" when the device is still unmounted. Auto-unmounting seems to be quite unsual for media-clients but I like it :-) > > So, as a reviewer I would vote to deactivate this option as default cause > > - its on the wrong place, this optiton has to be part of the camera > > config > > No, the menu is dynamic, when you plugin the camera after digikam is > started it will become visible in the menu. there is nothing to do in the > camera config... But some users are used to config their cameras in the main config window. They do not see this new option. And the current browse menu looks somehow crowded. In the kicker applet I can also choose what device interests me so IMHO I think its better to give the user an option to config what device/card/partition the user is interested in and only shows these dynamically in the camera menu when they are plugged it in. > > menu and an alternative to static mounting > > - it offers a choice which can make digiKam hang > > It will show all media devices, it can not decide if /boot will contain > images or not ;-) But can you reproduce the number of four (not five) open download windows that can not be closed so you have to kill digikam? As you have a mounted /home partition which you can access as user for sure I think this test Tom asked for already failed on your system. As user you can only mount partitions that are part of your /etc/fstab and you use something like mount /home as user or (e.g.) mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda5 /home -o rw,user as root.
