Tags - How to remove unwanted ones. Solution wanted.

Peter Mc Donough
Hi,

There seems to be no real solution on how to remove unwanted tags in DK.
System opensuse tumbleweed, digikam 5.3.0

I have tagged the pictures on my computer with digikam for ages, and of
course occasionally reorganized the tag tree.
Sometimes tags pop up which seem impossible to remove.

As I understand the standard procedure for consolidating the tag tree
is: Make sure the xmps and photos are writeable.
First - use maintenance mode to update from database to (xmp and photos)
Second - use maintenance mode to update from (xmp and photos) to database)
Now the same tags should be "everywhere".

Test with one tag:
Unmark lazy synchronization
Select in extended search the tag you want to remove
Select all photos which match that tag
Unmark the tag and apply
Repeat if necessary until no photos show that tag any more.
Expected result- all photos lose that tag.

Test: Use maintenance mode to update from (xmp and photos) to database)
And f*§%k, the tag is still in those photos.
What went wrong?

Hello Peter,

I am having the same issue.
Do you have any other picture management software installed on your computer?
I always thought that Windows Live Photo Gallery screws my tags up resurrecting the deleted ones from its database.

If that is not a case for you I suspect that previous versions of digiKam might wrote tags to more fields than digiKam 5. The list of the fields where digiKam writes tags to can be found in Settings / Metadata / Advanced / Tags.
Again, this is just a thought ...

When I come across such file again in future I will investigate more - need to check properties of the files, permissions, scan all metadata using exiftool, etc.

Also, there is an option called "Wipe all tags from database only" in Tags / Tag Manager / Sync Export which might help. I have never used it though. Please do full backup of your collection if you do.

Best regards,
Andrey Goreev

Actually, could you download the latest appimage (ver 5.4.0) and try it? I think it has a bleeding edge exiv2 which might solved the issue. I have had the same problems for sure but I kind of gave up on it and forgot when I checked it last time.

I also use darktable, but not for tagging, only for rating.
All existing tags are set with digikam version 4.x

Might be, but why can I remove tags in digikam and they turn up again,
when maintenance writes from files to database.
If they cannot be deleted by digikam, then it should not be possible to
untag them with digikam in the first place.

I did a test with digikam, making sure the database and files tags (all
writeable) are the same. I emptied and deleted the tags, then I deleted
the database and the .xmps - then maintenance files to database - tags
return(!).

I probably need some exiftool magic to get rid of unwanted tags.

The most efficient wiping ist "deleting database" and that I did,
without success.
I miss an option: "remove all tags digikam can see".

Can you run exiftool -a -G1 -s /PATH/FILE command on one of the files and see what the output is?
Let me know if the unwanted tag is under [XMP-microsoft] LastKeywordIPTC

No, the keyword is "04 - Winter" in

If you wish I could send you a PM with the whole exiftool output

I just found out, only jpgs  stubbornly keep their tags, of course,
raw-photos are not written to.

I am just a digiKam user so I think you better send a sample to Gilles.

My digiKam set to read / write IPTS IIM Application2 Keywords. (Settings/Metadata/Advanced)
How about yours?

Re: Tags - How to remove unwanted ones. Solution wanted.

Hello

I have the same issue, with both DK 5.3 and DK 5.4: I have some unrequired tags in tags list, and, even if I remove them from pictures in DK, select all the updated pictures and click "write metadata in disk" (in pictures which have appropriate write and write permissions), after refreshing, these tags come back.

I identified one origin of this issue: my pictures are stored in a synology NAS under photos station which write some of these tags in related files.
Even if pictures in digikam where removed from the unwanted tags, tags is still stored in the related files and so, when refreshing, DK read these files and so the unappropriated tags.
Removing unrequired tags from photo station have made disappear some of these unrequired tags from digikam after refresh.

But not for all.... And I don't know why.

I'm quite sure that pictures involved are both JPG and CR2 files.

Hope this comment can help.

Regards

Here is the output of exiftool -a -G1 -s on a sample file.
Tag "home" was removed long time ago however it is still written to many fields in the metadata.
Windows File Explorer does not see it but digiKam does. digiKam seems to be able to read it but not write it.
I guess we all need to submit bugs on exiv2 page and provide them with sample pictures.

Regards

Can you run exiftool -a -G1 -s /PATH/FILE command on one of the files and
see what the output is?
Let me know if the unwanted tag is under [XMP-microsoft] LastKeywordIPTC

No, the keyword is "04 - Winter" in
[IPTC]          Keywords                        : 04 - Winter

If you wish I could send you a PM with the whole exiftool output together with the photo
