Rearranging Tag Tree ???

digiKam 5.6.0 in Windows 7

What am I doing wrong or is it a bug ?

In either the tag manager or the right-hand tag pane, when I drag and drop a
tag to become a sub-tag of another tag, it asks "move here? and I click
"move here", at which point the tag and any sub-tags moves where I want it.

However, even with digiKam remaining open, when I return to digiKam from
another program, all of my tag manipulations will have returned to their
original state.

Some of these tags I have moved a dozen times, yet they will not stay moved;
am I missing something ?

I have had the same problem.

I think either Windows or NTFS store the metadata somewhere else and do not respect the data written by digikam.

I was not able to solve it.

Moving away from Windows / NTFS was a solution for me.

Still some tags pop up in old their places once in a while though.

Different programs write metadata in different places and that is a challenge. Programs like Windows Live Photo Gallery and Picasa do not always follow the industry standards which makes the things almost impossible to solve for an open source software.

For example, some xmp data written to my jpegs by WLPG causing exiv2 crashes. DigiKam ignores the error and do not crash nowadays but I would need to take time one day and clean up all that mess.

I would try:

Select with the search option all fotos which have that tag.
After that move the tag.
That way there should be no fotos with the old tag location.

I would try:

Select with the search option all fotos which have that tag.
After that move the tag.
That way there should be no fotos with the old tag location.

Rearranging the digiKam tag tree has been a problem, or maybe several
problems, for a long time.

Thanks for the information.

I guess what you describe is what also causes Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 to
clear away the Author and Copyright fields if I tag or geolocate in digiKam
first; if I can remember to do Elements first and then the digiKam tagging,
then the info remains unmolested.

Thanks; I was hoping it would be something simple like me missing a step in
the procedure or the like; but I guess it may not be so easy to cure.

I tried the solution of searching all images with a given tag and then while
they were in the browser window moving the tag; I did several tags in this
manner.

Alas, when I next opened digiKam, all my work was in vane.

Stuff like this just nags at me until I find a solution, even if it means
starting over from scratch.

One thing I intend to try is:
1.  Leave the tags I am trying to move as they are.
2.  Under the tag where I wish them to be as subtags, create new tags of the
same name, except with a
     symbol such as a - or a * or whatever, so that they can be determined
from the old tags.
3.  Bring up all images with the old tag.
4.  Add the new tag to these images.
5.  Remove the old tag from the images.
6.  Edit the new tag to remove the symbol from the tag name.

A lot of time-consuming work, but it should accomplish the task.
