Overlap in function in image editor, digikam, and showfoto.

Sherwood Botsford-3
These three applications seem to have substantial overlap, not all of
which makes sense to me.

E.g.  The image editor has access to the right hand sidepanel, and can
be used to tag pictures -- but there isn't a way to see tags.
Showfoto has access to tagging info, and a browser much like digikam.

What is the rationale behind so much duplication between these three programs?

Image editor is ... editor which support digiKam database.

Showfoto is a stand alone application which doesn't support extra
digiKam metadata.

Image Editor and showfoto use 80% of common code. they share plugins
interface too...

The image editor is part of digikam, an extra main window like the light table or the camera ui. It's the image editing facility of digikam. It cannot exist on its own.

Showfoto has no access to tags, ratings, comments, as it is not based on digikam's database. It's an image viewer and editor. It's there because it's easy to do reusing the image editor code. You do not need to use it at all if you use digikam.

BTW - since all this metadata can (even should) be stored in images metadata
ShowFoto could show them in read-only way. BKO?
