I'm looking for a little laptop (mini PC, notebook or whatever) I could easily bring with me when travelling, so I could work on my photos with Digikam when I'm away from home.
I don't intend to do a lot of editing with it; but I'll be away during 3 months this summer and intend to shoot quite a lot, so I'll need to do as much as tagging/organizing/etc. as possible. For those who work on their photos when travelling, have you any recommandation, for example about the screen size or anything else? Thanks for your advice. I use Toshiba T230. Powerfull, small, but not too (13' screen)

Marie-Noëlle,
Obviously, bigger is better. Perhaps your question should be rephrased as : "What's the smallest size that someone would recommend..." I have a couple of netbooks that I use when out on the road or off on projects. Working on them becomes frustrating because of the small screen size (10") but, I'd rather have this than carting a massive 15 or even 17" flat box with me. Sometimes I can connect my trusty netbook to a local monitor (as I do in my office) if one is available. Best of both worlds! * Netbooks have dropped to almost stupid price levels. In the US, one retailer has an Acer model on sale for $199 !! Thanks, Gilles.
I've always been very satisfied with Toshiba laptops. I still own a 17" that I consider to cumbersome to bring with me; and a rather old 15.4" (4.5 years) that I intend to put on eBay for sell and replace with a new smaller one. I was more or less convinced by Asus, that seems to have quite a rich assortment of Netbooks, but I'll have a look at Toshiba, too. You've had no Wifi problem with your Toshiba? Marie-Noëlle

Thanks for you answer.
I agree with your rephrasing ;-) I understand you manage with a 10", that's a good information. I've not made my mind yet, between a 10" and a 12" ... all of them seem to have enough RAM and plenty of disk space. So my main concerns will be screen sizes (obviously) and notebook weights. No problem with this model. It work perfectly. The advantage is weight : lesser than 1,5 kg : a perfect companion Screen is enough to work : 13'. Do not select less than : 10 and 11' are unusable to work on picture. Power supply is very small. Battery consumption : around 5-6 hours in power save mode. Really great. I use it to develop, make presentation at school, and play with my picture at home, where i can connect it to a large flat screen (27') There is an HDMI connector : I can play DIVX and MKV without problem on a HD tv. HDD capacity is around 320Gb. Keyboard is really a pleasure to use. The new model out recently by Toshiba are not too good. T230 is out in august 2010. computer is make with not a good quality of plastic. It's only the problem. But i cannot found a PC with the same quality than a Macbook (but it's not the same price) To conclude : it's really a good choice to be mobile with a computer. gilles _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

I'd avoid netbooks altogether. The idea of a cheap and small machine sounds good
on paper, but in reality netbooks are too limited for any serious photo management tasks. I took my Asus Eee PC 1005HA on my last two trips, and I found it rather frustrating in daily use: the 10" screen was simply too small for digiKam, and the Atom processor struggled with demanding tasks. Since then, I switched to HP dm3, which is smaller that a regular notebook. It's a bit on the heavy side, but the 13" screen is a pleasure to use, and there is enough processing power to handle photo editing. I'm running Linux Mint on it. It was not fast, but I was able to do basic color correction, cropping and RAW->JPEG conversion daily without frustration. The most important thing for me was resolution: at 11.6"/1366x768 I had enough screen real estate to work with. A more powerful system would have been nice but I did not find myself limited by my equipment. Then again I did not do any elaborate processing either. --george _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
