KDE SC 4.8 release, Oxygen icons and official digiKam icon

Paristo

Hi, who has the write permissions to oxygen icons so the digiKam and showFoto icons can be updated to Oxygen set?

Hi Paristo,

I must to have the right to write on Oxygen part in git, but I
recommend you to contact Oxygen team for that. It's better to ask to
Oxygen maintainers to not hurt peoples with intruder commits
(:=)))...

Re: KDE SC 4.8 release, Oxygen icons and official digiKam icon

Paristo
I had conversation with Nuno Pinheiro, a one Oxygen artists who made the dark digiKam icon for Oxygen. And he has refused to replace it with the one what digiKam team chose to be used. He only suggested that I would replace his icon with official digiKam icon on my computer.

I tried to explain that it is not fix for digiKam brand what gets damaged by having wrong icon in KickOff and other places, but then in digiKam itself it is the official one.

I needed just to know if someone of you has write permissions there. As I try again to discuss about the change because by my opinion, Oxygen artists should not choose the icon to wanted, if you voted the other icons to be used.

i totally agree with your viewpoint. digiKam icon must be hosted by
the project as well. I don't know why Oxygen team whant to force to
use Oxgen application icon if project one  is enough. Why to waste
time for that ???

In the worst case, you can always simply install your own icon, you can even overwrite the one in oxygen by a cmake icons install macro. Questions is how would the distributions deal with that..

Well, it's already do in digiKam, but, at least on my computers,
digiKam application Oxygen icons still used on the desktop. I don't
know why.

Look in digikam/data/icons/apps/ dir.

In the worst case, you can always simply install your own icon, you can even overwrite the one in oxygen by a cmake icons install macro. Questions is how would the distributions deal with that..

The KDE application icons goes to /usr/share/icons/<theme>/<size>/apps/<appname.png>

I have the understanding that digiKam itself adds own icons there as well. But it has not been at least on my two computer so for some time when Oxygen new icon has been. I have even done myself that I copy the icons manually after KDE or digikam update to /usr/share/icons/oxygen/ with correct way but still digiKam icon does not get changed in KickOff but it use the Oxygen version. I have tried to track that icon going trough all oxygen icons visually and checking KickOff configuration for digiKam entry data what points to correct location. I have started to think that I have missed somekind icon cache. As even when I create a new user, the Oxygen version is used, instead digiKam own.

I have as well tested two different LiveCD distributions by installing a digikam in them and even then Oxygen version is used instead digiKam own.

The solution for problem is not just that we could overwrite digiKam icon over Oxygen version, but that the Oxygen icon theme is used in many others as well, and when there is wrong icon named as "digikam.png" it is already doing its damage as it is then used in different purposes. So when people tie the Oxygen version to digiKam, it is not good for digiKam brand.

I have same problem and there might been change in freedesktop.org standard what size icons needs to be offered.
As right now the icon size are 16, 22, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256, 512 but there were few between them like 72 and 96.

I noticed that when I add digiKam launcher to desktop on plasma, and then I scale widget, it changes its icon from digiKam to Oxygen.
I just can not track the oxygen one where else it could be than /usr/share/icons/oxygen/<size>/apps/ so I could overwrite it. And when this happens even with new user (empty home), I am lost.

I just hope that digiKam icon gets added to Oxygen as it is not fair that Oxygen shows different icon named as digiKam.

Gilles, you can overwrite the digiKam icon with official icon. I asked from Nuno Pinheiro and he gave permission to overwrite it in GIT.
