Is there a way to batch edit IPTC (credits) metadata?

Ari
Hi,

I've recently discovered digikam, and I am now using RC2. Today I downloaded and compiled kipiplugins svn, which gave me the IPTC editor feature that I was looking for.

I need to set the copyright IPTC field in some 300 photos all in the same digikam folder. I tried selecting them all within digikam, then doing Image > Metadata > Edit IPTC > Credits > copyright, but unfortunately only the first photo metadata is actually edited.

Is there a way to change simultaneusly in all selected photos?

Thanks!

Hi Ari,

Not yet (:=)))... I have recieve some mail about this subject from others
digiKAm users. Well, the better way is to add a new option with a new dialog
dedicaced to batch Copyrighting image using IPTC.

Please file a new wish in KDE bugzilla using this url :

http://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?product=kipiplugins&bug_status=UNCONFIRMED&bug_status=NEW&bug_status=ASSIGNED&bug_status=REOPENED

Please use MetadataEdit component. Thanks in advance...

Until this is supported in digiKam, you can do this using the exiv2
command line utility that lets you edit not only the exif but also the
IPTC.
Hope this helps.

Merci Gilles. Bug (wish) is opened on metadataEdit component, the number is 138753  http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=138753

I'm sure that when digikam 0.9.0 flows into the distros a few months from now, you will receive this request more and more often; the latest digikam is so feature complete that covers nearly all everyday needs of digital image workflows, many people including pros will be switching from propietary tools. Most of those don't feel at home with command lines and will rely on digikam GUI for batch processing.

Thanks again,
Ari

Well, digiKam is a nice tool, and i prefer it to f-spot, but to be
honest in terms of digital image workflow there are some things that
could be improved a lot. I know that complaining without doing nothing
is worth bollocks, but the usabillity of the interface has a lot of
room to be improved. In Adobe Lightroom all the actions are available
at the left strip.. in digiKam you need to dig in the menus to get the
same functionalities. Granted, you can have some of the actions in the
toolbar, but a lot of them are only available through the menus, which
decreases a lot the productivity. Right now, if Adobe released a
version of Lightroom for Linux i would buy it (even if costed
something like 300 euros).
Don't get me wrong.. I'm for Free Software, and I help in promoting
it, but while editing my photos I don't want to spend a lot of time
digging in menus. An approach similar to the tool strip used by
Lightroom would improve a lot the productivity of digiKam (which i've
been using in the last weeks, and like a lot).

Best regards

Re: Is there a way to batch edit IPTC (credits) metadata?

Hi Gonzalo,

I think at this stage of the project the key issue is, do have all the processing tools you need or not? I think everyday needs are now all covered for most of us, including color management and many other nice stuff. For usability to improve, it will only take so long for a pro with dev skills to discover digikam and then simply develop a plugin or a new workflow-oriented view for digikam.

BTW, Why don't you open a bug (wishlist) with your idea of the interface?

I think the breakthru now is that this tool does all (or most) I need. Which for me, means not having to boot vmware wincrap image each time I need to work on my photos.

Regards,
A
