Argh, I was just going to post about that :)

Yes, very interesting document. Behind it are leading names in industry:

Adobe (de facto standard in image processing),
Apple (favorite OS of creative professionals),
Canon (one of two top professional camera producers),
Microsoft (most popular OS),
Nokia (top seller of cameras, no joking; de facto KDE overlord),
Sony (who? ;).

In few years these guidelines will be implemented in all levels - from
cameras, through professional software, to consumer software.

These document tries to systematize  reading, displaying and writing of
metadata formats.

I think these guidelines are well thought and worth implementing.

Forgot to add probably the most important thing:

This document IMO really well creates guidelines for creation of *one*
frontend for all metadata formats. I remember that some time ago Gilles
was very strongly against this but I hope you will reconsider you stand
:)

Well, I cannot find exact URL but you wrote something like "digiKam will
never have single frontend for all metadata".

Well, I cannot find exact URL but you wrote something like "digiKam will

What do you mean by a single frontend ?  a gui ?

Because about a backend, it's already done with Exiv2/libkexiv2

Currently, to change metadata behaviours, we have Metadata settings in config panel, right side bar with Comments & tags to change something (a litlle), and metadata edit kipi-plugin to change what you want.

I'm agree that we need to have a better factorization everywhere, but we are limited, especially with libkipi metadata handling.

Also, i would to make a set of users config about photograph properties to record in metadata. there is a file in B.K.O about.

But at least, libkexiv2 factorize duplicates actions to do in metadata by kipi-plugins and digiKam.

Thanks. No I had not seen this before. Most of it is more interesting
for higher level code, like digiKam and libkexiv2, some of it is
useful for Exiv2 (in particular the section about characterset
encoding), and some of it is quite basic / common sense and already
implemented.

Yes.

At the moment I can only sync comments, not copyrights or date. What
I'd like to see is one dialog which will allow for writing all metadata
without thinking were exactly it is going. Why? I am (as "my firm" not
me personally :) selling photos to very various clients. Some are
private persons, some are big newspapers or agencies with all top
software. Private persons probably has only system to read metadata for
them or simple software which will handle only Exif and newspaper can
read and use XMP. I want to serve them all with minimum input from my
side :)
