Importing images from camera(olympus e-300) into digiKam(1.7.0) on win xp 32bit

alexander pylyser
Hello,

I am trying to import .ORF(Raw file) & .JPEG's from my camera into digiKam(Version 1.7.0 Using KDE Development Platform 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4)).
Apparently the windows version is not yet able to detect camera's automatically so I tried to import the camera manually via Import > Camera's > Add Camera Manually. I filled in a name for my camera(Olympus E-300), selected to connect via USB and didn't touch the Camera Mount Path.
When I then try to import photo's by clicking on Import > Camera's > Olympus E-300 it gives me this error message:"Failed to connect to the camera. Please make sure it is connected properly and turned on. Would you like to try again?" - The camera was connected and turned on - confirmed via "storage" to ensure connection with the PC.

I have the latest Olympus firmware installed for both my lens:Zuiko Digital 14-45mm 1: 3,5 - 5,6 (version 1 I believe) and my camera body(version 1.5).

How can I import my images?

Thank you in advance,

Alexander Pylyser

I shoot a Nikon D90. Completely counter-intuitively, I must always unmount the camera before I can download my photos into DigiKam. Try it; Maybe you require the same workaround with your camera.

When attached to a computer a camera can appear either as a camera or
else as a USB storage device. It sounds like your camera appears as a
storage device. So instead of attempting to use the Import from Cameras
you should use Import from USB Storage Devices.

Hey Andrew,

Thank you for your response.

I switched to digiKam 2.2.0(the most recent version for windows I believe?). When the program opens I only have one option and that is to import via Cameras. Import via USB Storage Devices is greyed out and I am not able to access this.

I no longer run digikam on Windows so I cannot test the behaviour with a
direct comparison.

Was this with the camera connected and turned on? The menu item is
greyed out unless there is a suitable USB device available. Can you see
the camera as a disk drive in Windows Explorer? If so you can always
just use Explorer to copy the pictures from the camera.
Have you checked the USB setup in the camera's menus?

2.3.0 installer just available

USB device pop-up dialog require windows right to patch windows base registery. It's not yet done in installer and it's planed by Ananta who package digiKam for windows.

USB auto-detection through Solid interface is not complete into KDELibs and do not work yet.

Temporally solution : plug your camera, mount device with explorer, and import this folder in digiKam through import tool.

Hello Gilles,

Thank you for your response. Could you explain to me what exactly do you mean with "mount device with explorer" ?
Is this also the same way to import images from an external HDD ?

Hello Gilles,

Thank you for your response. Could you explain to me what exactly do you mean with "mount device with explorer" ?

When you plugin device, a pop-up windows appear to ask you want do you want with the device. Select show contents with file browser.

In the future, the goal is to patch registered application in windows registry to show digiKam in application list from this dialog.

Is this also the same way to import images from an external HDD ?

yes the same.

When I try to import > Add Folders after mounting my camera via explorer, digiKam gets stuck in the import process. Also I don't think it lets me select a whole folder. It just goes for an image or so it seems.
The same happens when I try to import from my HDD forcing a cancellation on the import.

The only way I seem to be able to get images into digikam is placing them manually via explorer into the folder I created for digikam.
