Import speed, is it really that slow?

buedi
Hi everyone,

since  I  got  a  new  Camera I looked around which kind of Software I
could  use  to manage my Photos. digiKam looks like it fits very well,
so I gave it a shot (or two in this case).

First,  I  installed  it  in a VM just to play around with it a little
bit.  To  get some Photos into digiKam I used the "Import from foreign
PC / location". I did this for 47 Photos (Jpeg, ~6MB each) and it took
20 minutes. I thought it´s because it runs in a VM which can make some
things much slower.

After  a  while  I  installed  it native on my PC (Windows 7 x64, Core
i5@4.5GHz  and  4  GB RAM) and did an import for the same 47 pictures.
This  time  it  took  17 minutes. While the Import process was running
there  was  no  considerable  CPU  activity (3-15%, so not even 1 core
running  full), no noticable HDD activity and no Network traffic (this
time I advised digiKam to save the pictures on my NAS).

Also while the Import process was running that slow, digiKam sometimes
did  not  react to my Input. What I mean is, that when a process hangs
you  cannot  click  into the Window. It seems like digiKam grabbed one
pic and just sitted there and did nothing for a while and then grabbed
the next picture.

Since  it´s  my  first  day  with digiKam I´m probably doing something
wrong.  Can  someone help me here or is the import process really that
slow?  If yes, I think I need a long holiday to import my hundreds of
pictures.

Regards,

buedi

As an addition to my intial Post:
On  Import  and  on  other  activities  within digiKam the Application
sometimes  does not respond. It seems to go to lunch for 10-15 seconds
sometimes.  I  used  the Installer from Sourceforge (I did not install
KDE  4  Win  manually).  Maybe  something´s  fishy  with the KDE 4 Win
environment  causing  these  lock  ups? It seems like this is also the
reason why the Import takes so long.

Assuming you have reasonable hardware, something is wrong with the install.
At least when compared to a native Linux install (SuSE 11.4 in my case).
I do not have DK on Windows experiencefor comparison.

While here, I will also observe that when importing from SD cards, USB
is a significant contributor to normal delay.
I'll estimate that USB3 with a USB3 reader is 2x plus(faster) over same
card in a USB2 setup.

Hi Carl,

thanks for your reply, I appreciate that very much.
I  don´t  think  it  makes  sense that you make a test with the import
picture  functionality.  Further  testing yesterday and today revealed
that  I  have  these  freezes all the time in Digicam and its included
tools  (Lighttable  and  Picture  Editor). The whole Suite freezes for
10-15  seconds,  sometimes  several times in a minute (which makes you
more  waiting  than  working)  and  sometimes  you  can work for a few
minutes and then *boom* freeze again.

I  did further testing on a XP SP3 x86 and my Windows 7 x64 System. On
both  I  tried the digiKam 2.2.0, 2.3.0 and 2.5.0 packages. I used the
internal  SQLite  Database  and  a  MySQL Database stored on my NAS. I
worked with pictures from an USB stick, my local drive and on my NAS.

The  freezes  are  independent  from  the  setups / variants mentioned
above. Since while the App is frozen I can see no CPU and HDD activity
I  don´t  know  how  to "debug" this. I can´t be the only Windows User
here and I wonder what setup others use and how it works for them.

Kind regards

I  did  some more testing and it seems like the hiccups / freezes have
something  to do with kioslave.exe. I cannot prove it because I do not
know if there are any Logfiles. I don´t know if filing a Bug report is
OK  with the lack of information I have. Maybe someone can point me to
the  right  direction,  so  I  can  provide  a Developer the necessary
Information  to  look  at that? It would be a shame if someone puts so
much  effort into a Windows Version of digiKam and nobody is caring if
it´s  working or not. I do, because I think it´s a remarkable piece of
Software.

It also seems like I have no hiccups / freezes when I do not touch the
Import   function.  If  I  only  work  with  other  digiKam  functions
(Lighttable,  tagging, searching...) yesterday I had no freeze at all.
As  soon  as  I  touch  the  Import function it starts to freeze after
importing  3-5  pictures and the Import process takes ages. Also after
the Import Process, digiKam freezes again and again until I close it
properly and open it again.

Yesterday  once the kioslave.exe caused an exception while digiKam was
freezing  again.  Having  a  look at the Taskmanager revealed around 5
kioslave.exe  processes. On my XP System when I do the Import it opens
around  10-14  of  these  processes. Maybe there´s a problem with that
process  and  not  digiKam  itself.  DigiKam  may  be  waiting for the
kioslave.exe to be finished maybe?

Back when I ran digikam on Windows, I too had issues that seemed to be
related to kioslave. Unfortunately kioslave is part of KDE 4 Windows and
so it is not clear where the problems really lie, in the KDE 4 Windows
port or in the digikam slave code.

Your best bet may be to simply copy the photos into your album directory
structure without using digikam's import.

In order to get debug output you need DebugView
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896647

and then

"Run kdebugdialog from digiKam install path. It must be an executable
file. It show a dialog with all debug space to display in debugview.
Turn on digiKam, kipi, kdcraw, kexiv2 space, run debugview, and
digiKam..."

By all means file a bug, it should all help in getting attention for
these things, but it may take quite a while.
