Import fails to convert IPTC keywords to tags

caseyfmail-linux
Hello all,

I recently installed digikam and digikamimageplugins 0.9.0, exiv2 and libexiv2-0.12 from Achim's repositories onto my Kubuntu Edgy system. Unfortunately, digikam does not seem to convert my photos' IPTC keywords into tags. My understanding is that this is a new feature in the latest release. Nor does an advanced search in digikam for IPTC keywords seem to work. The metadata/IPTC tab does show the existing IPTC keywords (good!), but I cannot edit any information in this field (isn't that a new feature?). I tried re-importing my photo directories into digikam, but to no avail. The only tags the programs recognizes for searches and filters are a few I created in a previous version of digikam.

One idea I had to address this situation was to uninstall (purge) this latest version of digikam in order to (hopefully) remove any existing digikam preference files, and then re-install, but I thought I'd run my problem by this list first. Also, I did not find any bug reports for this issue.

Any help sincerely appreciated. I am very happy to see limited but crucial IPTC support implemented in digikam, and I am eager to migrate over to using this program for photo management.

Casey Finnerty

No. This is planned for future release. ATM it works only in other
directions tags->IPTC keywords.

This is done in metadata plugin of kipi-plugins, Menu Image->Metadata

Do I need kipi-plugins version 1.3beta for this functionality?
I don't have this menu-entry here.

digikam: 0.9.0-0ubuntu1~ach0edgy1
libkipi: 0.1.4-1ubuntu2
kipi-plugins: 0.1.2-1ubuntu2

Well, I'm probably doing something wrong, but i don't see my tags
being written as IPTC keywords.. And yes I did check the option in the
preferences menu of digiKam. Is this supposed to work only on
importing the files or when one assigns the tags to the images?

Best regards

Hi,

currently the IPTC keywords are only read from pictures that are newly
imported into the database. That is, if your pictures were already in the db,
there is currently the tool missing to do some batch operations reading
metadata into the db.

Workaround: Remove pictures, start digikam, close digikam, move back, start
digikam. Disadvantage: comments, tags, rating from db is lost for these
pictures.

The other direction, db->metadata, works currently in the way that if you
change tags (preferably with the right side bar, there is a bug for this),
and the relevant configuration option is set, the tags are written to IPTC.
