I'm frustrated, because I edit an image, and then type a text and then saves,
and the text is now not with the edited image... :\

Maybe you could tell us more what you are doing? A screenshot or two would be nice.

Anders,

Can you indicate what you are editing the image with and what format are
you saving the image.

Some file formats do not support metadata -- e.g. PNG -- and some
programs strip the metadata from the image by default.

Re: Image text

Gus Gustafson

PNG absolutely supports metadata. It is not defined/standardized as much as jpg, but is supported, and digikam writes to it all the same info, and I find most programs I have tried also read it fine. GIMP unfortunately does not yet retain png metadata after editing, so must copy using exiv2 or exiftool, but there are plans to fix that eventually, I believe.

Erik,

You are totally right. My answer was a bit simplistic.

I regularly use PNG with GIMP and have a range of scripts I have created
to reinsert my metadata using exiv2.

That said, for the uninitiated, it can be confusing why their metadata
is stripped out of their photos.

 > ... and digikam writes to it all the same info ...

OK, thats new... last time I checked it didn't but I just tried it and
all the data is transferred. Great.

People will still have problems when using some external tools like GIMP
or ImageMagik to do some specific edits.

True, but that's /not/ a Digikam bug...
And as long as OP doens't provide more detail; we're only guessing :(

I do the following:

1. select one of my cool shots in RAW format
2. press F4, and accept the RAW converson
3. Enter a image caption in the relevant sidebar (the one with two big text
fields, the second one)
4. wait a sec or so, and the text just written has dissapeared from the screen
5. save the image after doing some corrections. The caption is now available
in the main digikam window, but not in the image editor.

Do step 3 & 4 before opening for editing. 3-4 and 2+4 are different
editing operations.

The best workflow is update you metadata, save, then convert/develop the
image. The metadata is then transferred to the new versions created.

Alternatively, after converting the image and saving it you can either
(a) update the metadata in the original file and click on "Apply to all
versions" or (b) select both files and update the metadata and click on
"Apply".

I agree that is better, due to the data staying with versions. However, it's
still a bit odd that what I did failed to work in the case of keeping the data
in display. ;)
