I'm quite interested by the book Digikam Tricks, but I don't know anything about ebooks.
I've just installed fbreader under Linux Fedora; will it be sufficient to read the book, or do I need anything else? EPub format can be read on smartphones, iPad etc, while Mobi on
Kindle and some other devices.
I haven't used fbreader but in its description ePub or Mobi aren't mentioned. I use the E-book Viewer on my own fedora, it comes with calibre. On fedora you get the special menu item under Applications > Graphics, but on Ubuntu you have to create your own or open Calibre first, then launch the reader by clicking on the View icon. I have no such device. Just an "ordinary" phone and a computer.
I can see this in the 'A propos': "FBReader supporte plusieurs formats de livres électroniques : ePub, fb2, chm, rtf, plucker, etc. La lecture directe à partir d'archives zip, tar, gzip et bzip2 est également supportée."
I'm on Fedora too; I just installed FBReader because it's the first one I've struggled upon, but I see that Calibre is available in the repositories too. But the link I've got http://www.amazon.com/digiKam-Tricks-ebook/dp/B004774LJS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AC2OY4L5JUE2O&s=books&qid=1306509037&sr=8-1 refers to a "Kindle" edition, and I don't know what it means, nor in which format it'll be downloaded. I do not own a Kindle device, but I do not need one to read Kindle ebooks. What I have is a free (as in free beer) software application called "Kindle for PC" which I recommend highly; the price, as I say, is right, namely $0. It is a Windows application, but it runs perfectly under Linux through the Wine emulator. I do not buy printed books anymore, and save a mint with Kindle ebooks. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

Thanks for your input. I'm now confident enough that I can read it on my computer. However, as there are several readers available under Linux, I don't think I'll use a Windows reader woth Wine. Hi Marie-Noëlle,
I'm the author of the digiKam Tricks book. Although it looks like you've found out how to buy the book and read it on Linux, I thought I'd chime in with a few clarifying comments. The book's official page is http://scribblesandsnaps.wordpress.com/digikam-tricks-book/ which is mirrored at digikam's website (http://www.digikam.org/drupal/node/543). The book also has a dedicated page in the Amazon Kindle Store (http://amzn.to/digikamtricks) If you have an Amazon Kindle reader or Kindle software installed on your machine, you can buy the book via Amazon. Alternatively, you can buy the book via PayPal. In this case, you'll receive the book in the EPUB format which you can read on virtually any platform, including Linux. Being a Linux user myself, I recommend using Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) or Cool Reader (http://coolreader.org/e-index.htm) to read the book. I tried FBReader, but I encountered some text rendering problems. Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, ideas, or comments, feel free to contact me at [hidden email] By the way, 50% of all book sales go to the digiKam project. btw if you're on KDE, and as epub and mobi are open formats, the book
file will open automatically with Okular, KDE's universal document reader. I had no problems with this approach, also with complex layout like for example with Manning books. Thanks Dimitri for your work on this book, it is highly appreciated (yes I bought it,-). Hi Stuart,
I automatically receive a notification from PayPal when someone buys the book. I then send download instructions to the buyer's PayPal email address. I've updated the book page to make that clear.
