I don't really understand what the OP wants.

I made just now this:

mkdir ~/test-digikam
mkdir ~/test-digikam/album1
mkdir ~/test-digikam/album2

copy some photos in each album (1 & 2)

launch digikam 0.10

configure the digikam database to be in test-digikam/album1

can open the photos of album1

configure digikam database to be in album2

can open photos in album2

each database is separated as it was with old digikam. slightly longer.

I wonder if the OP noticed the configure database menu (at the bottom
of the setting, configure collections windows

Yeah, why should it be labeled "My Albums" (plural) when only 1 can be created at the top level?

Well what I want (not sure about the OP) is to be able to do what you
describe above but, when I open album1 I want album2 to be completely
invisible.  As it stands I'm presented with both album1 and album2
under "My Albums".

More to the point what does the "My Albums" level add at all, it's
pointless.

if you look at my mail, you will see that each database is alone, with
the other album not visible

you must change the database, not only the album

like this:

If I do that then *everything* disappears!

I added a new collection and changed the database location as well,
then shut down and restarted digikam.  It came up with *no* albums
visible at all and with the top level (under My Albums) called
'digikam', I've never called anything digikam.

Gong back to Collections in configuration doesn't offer me anything
else, for a naive user you have effectively lost everything.  To
restore things I had to enter the location of my 'old' database
manually.

I'll try and explain (yet again) what I, and I believe some other
people, want.

I want an easy way to switch digikam from one collection to another
such that when it's running you can't see *any part* of the other
collections.  The switch could be done by a command line parameter or
by a configuration setting.

At present the options in the Collections settings are just plain
confusing IMHO.

you have ti do this the other way round, first create the database,
then add the album

why is that so important at first, may be if you explain that we may
found a better solution

problem with multiple databases is that the indexes also change
(quality and tags, I don't think they can be stored in exifs - but I
didn't try)

Ratings and tags can be stored in exif. Check settings, it's somewhere
there.
