Which OS are you on? Here’s where to edit the “Open with…” list and set the default app:
Windows 11/10 — quick per-file-type fix
1) Right-click a sample file (e.g., myfile.jpg) → Open with → Choose another app.
2) Pick the app, tick “Always use this app to open .jpg files,” then OK.
• If it’s not listed: More apps → Look for another app on this PC → browse to the .exe.
Windows 11/10 — from Settings (systemwide)
• Settings → Apps → Default apps → search the extension (e.g., .jpg) → choose the app.
• Or pick an app and set which file types it opens by default.
Windows — clean a messy “Open with” list (advanced)
• Create a restore point. Open regedit and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.EXT\
Delete stale entries under OpenWithList / OpenWithProgids. Deleting UserChoice resets the default. Sign out/in or restart Explorer.
macOS
1) Finder: select a sample file → File → Get Info (Cmd+I).
2) In “Open with:” choose the app → click “Change All…” to apply to that extension.
• If the app isn’t shown: “Other…”, set “Enable: All Applications,” check “Always Open With,” then Open.
• If the list shows duplicates/broken items: rebuild Launch Services (Terminal), then relaunch Finder.
If you tell me your OS and the file type you’re working with, I’ll give the exact steps.
