Headline: XMP vs IPTC; where to set in digicam; country; update

Sebastian Schubert-2
Hi,

I have several minor issues with the tags. I have got a picture with one XMP
and one IPTC headline tag. digicam says under IPTC:

> > File name: 20100131-190850-01.jpg (IPTC Records)
> >
> > >>> IIM Application 2 <<<
> >
> > ...
> > Headline : Ölbild
> > ...
> >
> > >>> IIM Envelope <<<
> >
> > Character Set : %G

OK, apparently the umlaut is wrong which is somehow expected when IPTC can
only use ASCII.

Well, the XMP tags are:

> > File name: 20100131-190850-01.jpg (XMP Schema)
> >
> > >>> Adobe Photoshop <<<
> >
> > ...
> > Country : Deutschland
> > ...
> > Headline : Ölbild
> >

> >
> > Rating : 1
Here we have a correct umlaut. Is there a way to prefer XMP when importing?
The wrong text is shown under the small preview picture as headline.

Btw., is there a way to edit this field? I was not able to find a field for this.

Then, digicam seems to ignore the Country information. In the digicam Location
fields City, Sublocation, Province are correct, only country is empty. What can
I do? Bug?

Then, I there a way to update the tags when the old picture is overwritten
with a new one? The old version had a rating of 0 stars. Apparently, digicam
knows that the new one has one star (see above), but this is not shown. I
tried "Rebuild Fingerprints", it did not work.'

THX

Sebastian

Vote for the feature request "Transparent update of picture content and
metadata after file update and on software start"!
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173632

You might especially want to read comment #7, where Marcel Wiesweg
writes that "digikam gives priority to what is stored in its database".

Thanks for the hint. I think their arguments are valid, an option would be
appreciated nonetheless. Anyway, the option to update the tags is way too well
hidden. Why don't put it in the menu? (also added comment to bug report)

How about using country code (DE) and Country (Germany/Deutschland)? Or
just the country code only?

$ exiv2 -pa sample.jpg
...
Iptc.Application2.CountryCode                String      3  NZL
Iptc.Application2.CountryName                String     11  New Zealand
...

Do you mean "Image / Reread metadata from image"?

Ohhh... i see, not that hidden after all. I expected a more general approach
like update all pictures at once (which is of course possible now by marking
all pictures).

Thx
Sebastian

Or simply using the analogue entry from the album menu ;)

This is in the file:

$ exiv2 -pa 20100201-101712-01.jpg
...
Iptc.Application2.CountryName                String     11  Deutschland
...
Xmp.photoshop.Country                        XmpText    11  Deutschland

But in the right hand side under Caption/Tags -> Location -> Country, there is
nothing in the text field. Is this the correct behaviour?

Cheers
Sebastian

Well, I guess no excuses then... ;) Must have been blind (by the
amazingly good pictures of mine or, more likely, by the amount I have to
sort out.... ) ;D

Yes that works. Is there a reason why the code is needed?

Cheers
