Digikam in Ubuntu 17.10

Gianfranco Pancino
I would like to submit a question, since I did not find the item in your Faq.
I was been using Digikam on Ubuntu 16.04. Since my upgrade to 17.10, I was able to install Digikam by opening in Ubuntu.x org and using synaptic, but the application is not fully functional: it lacks for exemple of the extensions for exportation, and the home page  is not complete lacking the upper bar of commands.  Would you have any suggestion? Thank you. Gianfranco

In synaptic make sure to install digikam5 and kipi-plugins5 (I think) . The "5" is important.

As for the menu please try the latest appimage from here first:
https://files.kde.org/digikam/
Just download it, make the file executable and execute.
You can also try to remove digikamrc file from your home directory and see if that helps. You will lose all your configurations so make sure to backup the file first.

Hi Andrey, thank you for your reply. I have followed your suggestions.  Indeed I have Digikam 5.6.0. I have also executed the appimage of the last version 5.8. Finally, I uninstalled Digikam and reinstalled it from platform. In ebery case the app open directly on the albums and there is not the upper band with Browse album Tag Item Edit View Tools .......,so greatly reducing the functionality of the app. If I do not find a solution I will be obliged to forget Digikam.  have you other advices? Thank you again

Addenfum. I have just seen that the reinstallation allows the export of three images.  This is already a significant progress. Best

Gianfranco, I don't know if this is the solution for the missing menus, I have the same challenge on all newer versions of Ubuntu, but have been able to get around it by using the Tools menu on the bottom right side of the screen. It seems to have all the functionality of the missing menus, but there was something I had to install to get the icons there, but now I have forgotten what it was.

Regards
Derek

Re: Digikam in Ubuntu 17.10

Gilles Caulier-4
The export to remote web service still in export menu entry.

The Tools menu host (now) the batch process tools, as video slideshow, send by mail, panorama, etc... This tool are hosted in digiKam core as well. They are not plugins, and don"t require in install extra packages.

The export tools stay extra plugins for the moment and require to install kipi-plugins package.

With 5.8.0 pre release, we have fixed a dirty bug in the menu concatenation engine based on XML data files which can introduce empty main menus in GUI. To solve this problem definitively, just remove these XML menu description files from your home directory :

~/.local/share/kxmlgui5/digikam
