Digikam 5.4.0 won't start on Windows

AndriusWild
Digikam won't start anymore on my windows 10 64 bit machine. I can see the process running in task manager but the window never appears. It is weird because it was working couple of days ago and I don't think I even rebooted the machine. Is it a well known iisue? I guess it is an issue with 64 bit version again.
Thanks
Andrey

What do you see as debug traces while running DebugView from Microsoft when you start digiKam. Look details here :

I am not sure what that file is.
I have never uploaded any GPX files. I haven't been writing any metadata to RAW files either.

Re: Digikam 5.4.0 won't start on Windows

Eduard Zalar
I had the same problem with digiKam V5.1 und V5.2 on Window 10.  From one day to another, it didn't start up anymore.
The process was running, but stale. The digiKam window didn't show up.

Below is what I did to solve the problem. I posted it on Sept. 28th to this mailing list.

Eduard Zalar <[hidden email]> schrieb am Mi., 28. Sep. 2016 um 23:19 Uhr:
Hello,

finally, I solved my "digiKam is not starting" problem by:

Uninstalling digiKam V5.2.
Deleting each and every digiKam related file which I found on my disk after uninstalling.
Rebooting.
Installing digiKam V5.2 and stepping again through the initial configuration.

Now, it works well.

With best regards
Eddie

My suspicion is that there are some problems with migration of digiKam settings from V4.x, or from V5.1.
But this is just a suspicion and this problem might disappear in the future as more and more digiKam user work with V5.x.

And now, you confirm that, since you clean all settings files from DK < 5.0, the application never hang at startup randomly ?

This is a serious possibility. I already seen some serious dysfunction when old settings files was used. This is due certainly due to the legacy settings scheme used by digiKam throught the from KDE4 frameworks and by some incompatibility beteen Qt4 and Qt5 data serialization used to store settings (windows splitter size for ex)...

My suspicion is that there are some problems with migration of digiKam settings from V4.x, or from V5.1.
But this is just a suspicion and this problem might disappear in the future as more and more digiKam user work with V5.x.

I used to have digikam 4x installed on the computer too. I will do the clean up and report back if that helped.
By the way, did you use CCleaner or any cleaning software or you just went through all the junk folders like AppData/Roaming etc. and deleted everything related to digikam and KDE ?

Andrey Goreev

Re: Digikam 5.4.0 won't start on Windows

@Gilles:
First of all, I never used DK V4.x. I started with DK V5.0.
I had the problem with the change from V5.1 to V5.2.
And yes, I confirm that I never had an application startup hang after I did the cleanup.

@Andrey:
Because digiKam was my first cross-platform application, I searched my complete disk for KDE and digiKam.
Another source was a list of files which Gilles provided: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=364258#c10
With this list I was able to identify all digiKam files and delete it.

Good Luck!

Ok, I uninstalled digikam from my computer, searched my drives for "digikam" and "kde" and deleted all leftovers and then installed it again.
It is working now. I will let you know if I can't run it again.

Digikam won't start anymore on my windows 10 64 bit machine. I can see the process running in task manager but the window never appears. It is weird because it was working couple of days ago and I don't think I even rebooted the machine. Is it a well known iisue? I guess it is an issue with 64 bit version again.
Thanks
Andrey
