DigiKam on Debian

Mick Sulley
I have been running DK 2.6 on Debian Wheezy for a while now and I would
like to move up a bit.  I have just built a new, more powerful system
and have installed Wheezy again, so if I install DK from repositories I
will get 2.6 again.

What are my options?  I don't necessarily need to get to the latest
version of DK but I would like to get a bit more up to date.  I don't
mind upgrading to Jessie but not at all sure about Sid.

If I upgrade to Debian Jessie which DK will I get?
Could I manually install a later version on Wheezy or will there be
dependency issues?

Advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mick

This is probably more of a Debian discussion than a Digikam discussion I
suppose, but it's funny that you should ask, because I just upgraded to
Jessie this morning, primarily in order to get Digikam a bit more
up-to-date (but also for all the other outdated applications out there).

Upgrading to Jessie, Digikam was upgraded to version 3.5.0 (unrelated,
the upgrade unfortunately didn't fix the problems I were having though).
I really wouldn't recommend going to Sid, which is very experimental,
unless you are absolutely certain that it is what you want. There is
some risk involved with doing a dist-upgrade (although mine was easy
enough), so be careful. I made a complete copy of my main partition
(stored to an image file somewhere else) before the upgrade, but that
may have been a little overkill. Better safe than sorry, though.

Hi
If you upgrade to Jessie you'll get digikam 3.5...like you can see it on
Debian site...
BUT DK 3.5 is buggy. If you need stable DK,  stay in Debian Wheezy.
DK 2.6 works fine

I have no problems with digiKam 3.5.0 on Jessie. 3.5.0 contains many bug
fixes since 2.6.0 was released.

You can check the status in Debian here

I've no problem with Digikam 3.5, and enjoy the non-buggy tag management that has just been fixed before 3.5 has been released.

Thanks for the reply.  When I looked at the links I saw reference to backports, perfect answer I thought!  So I tried, failed, investigated and found that DigiKam is not included in backports for some reason.

So I have now upgraded to Jessie.  There seem to be a few differences in the system but at least I now have DigiKam 3.5.0

I'll see how it goes.....

May be, it depends on the way you use DK: are you using sqlite, mysql
internal server or external mysql server (my case) ?

Update - After moving up to Jessie I struggled a little with the new desktop interface, but I was getting used to it.  The big problem was playing video, switch to full screen worked once but any change after that would freeze the video and require a close and re-open. After a lot of very frustrating attempts to fix it I have moved back to Wheezy.

I am currently investigating pinning which should allow installation of a Jessie package within a Wheezy install.  Testing in a VirtualBox this time - I have learned that lesson at least!

I thought the main advantage of Debian was not to ever have to do a
distribution upgrade. I'm using an ubuntu-based linuxmint distribution
and was thinking on a linuxmint debian based precisely to avoid the
never well solved problem of distribution upgrades on linux (huge
backups, re-installation of all packages, sometimes even a painful
reinstallation from scratch...)
