Can't Create Album on WinXP

Gary Pajer
Version 0.10.0-beta6 (rev.: 887796)  (svn, built myself)

I have folders on an external USB drive that I want to add as albums.
If I choose Album>New... and fill in the dialog box, click ok, digiKam
returns with an error:  "Failed to create directory"

Is this a bug, a problem with my system, problem with my build, or am
I doing something wrong?

NTFS

Ok. Now, try to use another removable media (as USB key for ex.) formated with Fat32, and try again.

Re: Can't Create Album on WinXP

Gary Pajer
Wait ... I can't create a new album on my local HD (NTFS),  or a local
HD partition (FAT32).  There are about 20 albums already there.  I
don't remember how they got there.  If I remember correctly, I chose a
"root" directory for my photos, and digiKam automatically created
albums from the directories in there.  Does that sound right?

Summary:  I can't seem to create *any* new album from within digiKam.
I must be missing some important instruction.

I couldn't see this, but on the other hand I tried to add a new external
repository and this crashed digikam (I had no time to look after that).
So very likely it is a bug.

By "add a new external repository" do you mean add an album of images
that live on an external drive?  If not, what is an external
repository?

I've re-discovered the concept of a "collection" in the Settings
dialog.  If I try to register a new collection I get an error:

"Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: The name
org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files."

The behaviour might differ between mingw and msvc.

Removable...->Add Collection
then choosing a folder -> crash

about the klauncher stuff: please kill all KDE applications (including
dbus-daemon), run 'update-mime-database %KDEROOT%\share\mime' (replace
KDEROOT) from your kderoot directory, then run 'kbuildsycoca4
--noincremental'. Very likely then you can experience the same crash as
I do.

Patrick

Progress:  I did as you suggest, and the klauncher stuff is gone.

Settings>Configure digiKam>Removable Media>
The dialog open up, and a file tree is displayed.  But it's root is
c:\, and I can't figure out how to find my external USB drive.
Windows has assigned it a drive letter (H:) which I can see in Windows
Explorer.

Changing the "tab" selection on the left:
"Home" and "Root" both show a tree rooted at c:\
"Network" and "Trash" are blank

(I continue to feel that I'm missing something obvious.  If so, I apologize.)

Thanks for your help,
gary

at that point you miss something - but I wouldn't call it obvious.
There is a path (like "Home > My Pictures > Paddy" ) at the top of the
dialog (should be above the tree) if you click near the end of that, you
can enter a normal path too which can be on a different drive.

What I wrote before is non-sense and is only applicaple to KDE file dialogs.
At the bottom you should be able to set your path as you wish.

Aha.  Yes.

Now I have news, but I'm not sure if it's good or bad:  :)
I was able to add a collection from my USB drive without any crash.
Everything seems to be working smoothly as advertised.

anything I can do to help track down your crash?

not really, I am using msvc and I will not have to much time in the
coming 5 days. Maybe I will find some time but I doubt it.

If you experience any more bugs & crashes, please file a bug report in
http://bugs.kde.org - I guess a lot of stuff might be still hidden in
the kipi-plugins If you can test those, it would be nice too. I tried
sending pictures via email already from within digikam but with f*cking
thunderbird it of course will not work correctly.

one thing I now remember is: can you please try to rename albums? Does
that work for you?
