I've got a bunch of nef and cr2 files. I'd like to save them as dng
files. If I specify dng in the Save As dialog, it seems to work. But digikam (and ufraw and darktable) can't open the saved file. Is this supposed to work? Is saving in nef or cr2 supposed to work? sean _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
I would guess it doesn't work. There's a DNG converter maybe under tools - not at my desk now.. /jd

If you want to save a bunch of file as dng, select all the files you
want then click Tools > DNG Converter. Hope that helps. On Mon, 2010-04-26 at 19:37 -0400, sean darcy wrote: > I've got a bunch of nef and cr2 files. I'd like to save them as dng > files. But that doesn't help me from Image Editor. If I'm there, how do I save the changed image? No Tools menu. Just Save As. sean _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
Sorry, but you can't save a demosaic'd RAW file to a another RAW format.

So it should be considered a bug that it seems to work when you try?

With my digikam (version 1.1.0 on Fedora 12) I can not select dng file type in the save as dialog. If I type in test.dng as file name the file is written, a file with the extension dng exists, but in reality this is a tiff file. > > Is this supposed to work? Is saving in nef or cr2 supposed to work? This is what the dng-converter is for. But I don't use it for my cr2 files because neither the exposure nor the white balance was set as before. I heard that adobes dng converter is much better, but I never have tested this. > > sean > Martin _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

Until we get non-destructive .dng editing (Which, by the way, is a project in this years Google summer of code!), I'd just stick with good ol' TIFF.

You can save it also as 16 bits PNG (or maybe we should say 48 bits PNG?), it should be the same of TIFF but maybe the final file will be smaller. PNG compression is lossless. It's what I do when I need to save a demosaiced RAW image that needs more editing: RAW -(demosaicing/basic editing)-> 16 bit PNG -(editing)-> JPEG -> print regards gerlos -- "Fairy tales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." This is your choice, as long as you use non destructive formats the difference is either size or performance (and exif data as some formats does not support exif). If you don't plan to edit them right now, don't convert them at all. I usually go these steps (shoot jpeg and raw): 1. sight all my pics and delete the unusable 2. tag all pics 3. tag those pics I don't want to edit (good enough) 4. edit raw files of pics I want to adjust some parameter and safe recipe (ID file) 5. convert them by batch job (to the format specified in the ID file - mostly jpeg or png) 6. edit those I need to adjust in more detail 7. sharpen if needed Between step 4 and 5 there can ba a delay of some days or weeks. At the end I usually have a jpeg and sometimes a png (mostly 8bit). Btw: for adjusting while balance and colours you need a calibrated and profiled monitor. > > sean > Martin _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
