In Settings Configure digikam when you choose Colours. Then just move the Side
Bar in order to read the rest of the window and it suddenly logs you out. I
have a 17 inch CRT Monitor and can't see the whole window...

Which color button ? From Image Editor settings ?
Sound like a bug in your KDELibs. These color buttons and color selection
dialog are managed by KDE library, not digiKam as well.

Well, here's about the weirdest thing I've ever come across in 5 plus years of
running Fedora and other versions of Linux too. I use Gwenview as my default
image viewer. I just click on an image file in Krusader and open it with
Gwenview with no problems ever. I have quite a few Screen shots made with
Shutter in a Directory. And the Shot that I just uploaded of digikam causes the
user logout problem too. I can open the png image in other image viewers with
no problems. And I even scanned that Dir with KlamAV just to make sure I don't
have one of the few Linux Viruses out there. Guess, it does have something to
do with KDE... But what I don't have a Clue... Very strange goings on... I
don't suppose you can reproduce the problem there with digikam, right?

The slider is managed by Qt4 API. It's not digiKam fault in all case. Your
color theme is also a KDE extension. It's not a crash of digiKam but from your
X11 session. It's completely unrelated to digiKam.

Try to change KDE color theme using KDE control panel and try again.

Try to use another KDe application, as Kate editor. It crash also when you
enter in config setup dialog by the same way ?

Note : I never see a crash like this. It's relevant only of your computer.

"Suddenly log out" looks like an X.org server crash to me. So probably the old
graphics driver nightmare. Or a problem with the KWin window manager.

I logged in to my KDE Desktop and change KDE color theme using KDE control
panel to Oxygen and it fixed the Problem with DigiKam! But, that was yesterday.
Today the Logout Demon is back!:O I tried another color scheme in KDE and on it
Gnome too, but to no avail. I work in Gnome Desktop, but I have KDE installed
too. So, I logged in to the KDE Desktop and changed the color settings by just
choosing another Theme each time. Then tested the changes. The first time,
there was no change. The second time worked. The third it was back to Logging
me out instantly. That's a very odd bug to me. And a sad one too, Digikam is a
great App when it is Working. But I don't want to risk loosing all of my other
work if I forget and hit that side bar in Settings again. It looks like a great
App for working with and Importing Images from my Cameras and Cards. It will
import .mov files and other most Apps that I've found wont do that. Except
CamCardSync, which is a bit too simplistic for me.

I'm not familiar with Kate. I looked in my Fedora 14 Repos for it and found
only 2 Apps that mention Kate. "Faust AUdio STreams is a functional programming
language for real-time audio signal processing. This package provides Faust
code syntax highlighting support for KDE's Kate/Kwrite." and "Artwiz is a
family of very small futuristic fonts, with varying styles of typefaces
designed at a single pixel size. The minimal nature of the fonts makes them
popular with users of lightweight window managers. These fonts have been
updated by Alec Zapka to be compatible with modern software and support an
extended character set. This package contains the Kates font in three
encodings, English, German, and Swedish." Are either of these what you are
talking about?

I have Kwrite and use it as my Default Text file editor with no problems. I use
Krusader as my File Manager and use Gwenview as my default Image Viewer. All
with no Problems. With the exception of the one Screen Shot of the DigiKam
Window, Configure – 'digiKam'_091.png, which caused the instant Logout when I
open it. I just noticed the special characters in the name and renamed the file
Configure-digiKam-091.png. But this made no difference with the Logout Problem.
I have run my System for 3 days without any problems, as long as I stay away
from this file and from DigiKam and that messed up png file. So my system is
fine...

That rang a bell with me. I have recently installed a new ATI Radion Video Card
and still have the Onboard Intel Video Xorg Driver in the System. Also, I use
Yum Installed Apps Lists to build my Systems and I take them from my other
systems. So, there is also an Xorg nVidia Driver installed on this System. So
far, I have had no problems with this and usually don't on other Systems. I
went to uninstall the nVidia Driver to see what would happen. But, this
concerns me. I get a message saying... "Additional confirmation required To
remove these packages, additional software also has to be modified.
x-org-x11drivers..." I'm not sure if this will uninstall all of my Xorg Video
Drivers and Send my back to Terminal only mode!:O I have had that happen before
and it is not fun to fix!:O This is why I have not uninstalled them already.
What do you think? I'm attaching Screen Shots..

I have similar or maybe same issue here with digikam 1.8.0 and before also
1.7.0 and Gnome.

1 - Open program Preferences.
2 - Switch to Color Management tab
3 - Scroll to see more options or try to unfold Working Space ICC select.
4 - Gnome immediately crashes. I can see light blue / black blinking terminal
screen with é sign all over that for a while, than GDM restarts. Here is
backtrace from Xorg.log

Don, Kate is another KDE editor like KWrite, only more advanced, I believe it
is in kdesdk fedora package. Can you please attach that image, which causes
your X to crash? I'm on Fedora as well so I'd like to test that one. As to your
drivers problem, you should be running either 'radeon' (open-source-version) or
'fglrx' (better-performance-version) driver. Fire up Konsole and type 'lsmod'
and see, which one is on the list (and pray not both of them). Anyway, this
seems more likely to be a distro bug, not digiKam's. And for helping with your
graphics card drivers, please head to fedoraforums.org (there's a guide) or use
IRC #fedora channel on irc.freenode.net (but you must be registered to join
#fedora).

Michal, what distro are you using?

Martin, thank you for your comments it gave me some clues. I'm running Ubuntu
10.10 with ATI graphics using proprietary fglrx driver, very recent one (8.801)
from user X-Swat repository - merely repackaged binary drivers by ATI.

I just tried to start X with Xorg driver and there were no crash. After that I
tried downgrade to fglrx drivers version in official Ubuntu repository (8.780)
and again - no crash. So I suppose it's related to the new versions of fglrx
driver.

Hopefully it can be solution for Don as well...

This entry is not relevant of a digiKam problem. Check video driver from your
distro...

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with this. I have been busy with
other things. I realized that I was having the Crash Problems any time I ran
Digikam. Not just when I go into the Color Settings Window. So, I uninstalled
Digikam right after my last post on 01-13-11 and have had no more problems with
my X Session Crashing to date, 03-12-11. A couple of weeks to a month after I
uninstalled Digikam, I also uninstalled all but the xorg-x11-drv-catalyst
driver for my Radeon Video Card. I did have an nVidia Driver installed that was
in a yum install list that I made to install all of my favorite Apps at one
time. But the nVidia driver really just laid dormant, since I don't have an
nVidia Card in this machine. I've done this for years in both Fedora and Debian
with no problems that I can remember. I only have an Onborad Intel Chip and the
new Radeon Video Card in this machine. I have not re-installed Digikam because
I don't want to risk having the Crashing problems again. I may try Digikam
again when I have the time to deal only with it and risk the crashes again.
It's a shame that it doesn't work with Fedora 14 on the Gnome Desktop for me. I
have many, many other Apps installed that give no problems and have never had
my x11 Desktop Crash Since I uninstalled Digikam with or without the extra
unused Video Drivers. I keep thinking that I have encountered this problem with
Digikam in years past and just uninstalled it and went on. I know there was a
Graphics App with good features, that I had allot of problems with and gave up
on it back in about Fedora 7. Not sure now. But, I had just recently found
Digikam in my Fedora 14 Repos and decided to try it out. I think I may have
been through this before!:O I'm no Coder. But I do know this... You can't
expect Operating Systems and Desktop Applications to be written to work with
each individual Software Application. Each Application has to be written to
work in each and every OS and Desktop Application the the Developers want it to
run on.
