When I edit a .NEF file and then save it, the Properties tab from the sidebar
is shown afterwards, taking about 95 % of the screen width.

Couldn't reproduce here.
Only with .NEF files? Was the properties sidebar opened before?
Does removing the "ImageViewer Settings" paragraph from your digikamrc file
help?

Cannot reproduce anymore either with current svn.
Didn't matter whether the sidebar was opened or not.
