The Nikon Capture NX2 image processing program has a so called "delighting"
feature, that helps in repairing images that suffer from very strong contrasts
(dark parts too dark; bright parts too bright). This function can be applied to
raw files and stretches the contrast such that the picture reveals details that
were hidden in the original. To my knowledge the "delighting" function is Nikon
proprietary. It would be very useful if somebody could reinvent an equivalent
functionality for digikam.

Gilles,

thanks for the quick reply. I played around with the various options in
"Color/Auto Correction". But I wasn't able to achieve the same result
that I had with Nikon's "Delighting" on one particular critical image.
"equalize" delivered the best result, but in the bright parts of the
image, it got far too bright, and the colors washed out. Unfortunately
my test license of Nikon' Capture NX2 has expired, so I can't produce
any more test cases. And also Capture NX2 runs only on windows, which is
my most hated system. And  I am not expert enough to really find out
what causes the difference in the outcome of the two programs. Maybe you
have access to , or can download a test version of Capture NX2 to find
out, how "Delighting" works. To me "Delighting" seems to be the only
feature missing in digikam. Nonetheless digikam is a great program; I
have been using it for more than a year now, with perfect results.

To original poster:
One tool I've used extensively when the auto contrast fails is the
brightness/contrast/gamma plugin.

Increasing gamma brings out  shadow details.
Decreasing brightness brings out highlight details
Playing with contrast moves stuff in the midtones.

In the 1.0.0 "pre" series, digikam offers the local contrast tool ("Enhance" ->
"Local Contrast"). I could imagine, this is the functionality you are referring
to.

Hi Wolfi,

yes I saw this new "Local contrast" feature in 1.0.0 and it looks like
it is something similar to the Nikon delightening feature. But I was not
able to test it so far, because I still have to understand how it works.
