Compare with MaPiVi (http://mapivi.sourceforge.net/mapivi.shtml , GNU GPL licence).  
With MaPiVi it is possible to search on IPTC-text,
Search result is presented in a table with for example one columne for "thumbnail"  and one columne for IPTC metadata and so on...
So it easy to read IPTC-metadata for each photo without opening.

Following recents progress into new Advanced Search tools from Marcel with KDE4 port, i close this file.
