[Bug 145569] New: there's non print option

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=145569
           Summary: there's non print option
           Product: digikam
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Debian testing
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: andrex alumni utexas net

Version:            (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from:    Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS:                Linux

If there's an option somewhere in Digikam to print a photo, I can't
find it.  Instead I have to open each photo I want to print in some
external viewer, then print.

I did finally find the File > Export > Print Wizard feature
(apparently from kipi-plugins), but this isn't what I want.  I just
want to print a single photo, to one of my standard CUPS printers, on
4x6 photo paper.  The Print Wizard doesn't offer me this capability
(it only offers letter-sized papers) and anyway is too convoluted for
the need.

Digikam should offer a standard File > Print feature, that just calls
kprinter.

Another useful approach would be to put kprinter in the "Open with"
context menu for each photo.  But maybe that's a kprinter issue.

Thanks,
Andrew.

Andrex,

Just open the image in editor and use File/Print.

OK, I see that now.  Thanks.

But look, I looked around in Digikam for a long time and never found that.  To me this says that the bug is not invalid.  The print capability is buried-- I tried to find it and couldn't.

Where did I look for a print dialog?  In the obvious places:  I selected the image I wanted to print, and then right-clicked for the context menu-- nothing there.  Then I looked in the Image menu-- still nothing.

And anyway, why should I have to open the editor just to print?  I don't want to edit my image.  If I open the editor, I risk damaging the photo.  And of course I never thought to look there, because I didn't want to edit my photo-- I just wanted to print it.

The solution is very simple:  add a Print option to the Image menu, and to the context menu for an image.

Thanks,
Andrew.

The print option is into Editor because it support color management. It's very powerful to render properlly color on printer using the right ICC color profile for your printer.

The standard way using directly KPrinter cannot do it...

Else if you don't want to use Color Management to print your pictures, use the Print Wizzard kipi-plugin instead. If this tool is not adapted for you, well report a bug in kipi-plugin bugzilla area, not in digiKam :

Well it seems that you are determined to ignore this bug.  I've
described to you the experience of a seasoned KDE and Digikam user who
was unable to figure out how to perform the basic operation of printing
a photo from Digikam.  You respond by marking the bug invalid.  You win,
I won't get into a bug-state-changing contest with you.  But I am
telling you that this is a basic flaw in the user experience.  Whatever
your reasoning, it is a failure to the user.  Color management?  What is
that?  I don't know or care about color management.  I don't want to
know.  I just want to print my photo.

Kipi-plugins?  Who says I even have that installed?  Or if I do have it
installed, that I can find its print option in the menus under Album >
Export?  Sorry, but that's a bad joke.  I would never have found it if
not for Google.  And the fact is that that is a tool for printing whole
albums, multiple images to a page, on letter-size paper.  I should have
to file a bug against kipi-plugins to print my photo?

What I want is so simple:  Image > Print.  Right-click > Print.

Now let me also say that you've done a great job with Digikam and I'm
not ungrateful.  Thanks very much for making it, and for taking the time
to consider this report.

Andrew.

Gilles,

I agree with Andrew. Common functionality like printing should not be hard to find from a top level or popup menu.

If Digikam needs a colour management settings in order to provide data downstream then this could be prompted for the first time the user clicks on the print menu and retained afterwards.  Same as how applications will ask you to pick your default printer if you haven't already.

I too support the need for an easy/ quick print dialog.. Buried within the Edit mode is a little obscure for many..

It is HIG hunting season and having a Print menu item is pretty standard requirement/ expectation across KDE document (image) applications.

In worst case proper entry should be in expected place but instead of
printing it could give info about printing structure. Although I agree
that Digikam should provide simple printing service out-of-the-box.
