I am trying to get my wife moved over to Linux and using Digkam on our
laptop. The last thing I need to do is to have the photos displayed in calendar mode (not album mode) and have digikam select the photos by their creation date and not album date. The problem is that the folders on disk have a much newer date than the actual creation date of the photos which is there in the EXIF data, digikam is displaying photos for say 2013 which are in albums (folders) created in 2013 but the photos themselves have an EXIF create date of 2002. Why don't you simply use the Calendar view in Digikam. Pictures are automatically displayed/sorted by creation date (take, from the EXIF). That's what I am using, selecting Calendar from the leftmost side of the
main screen. I have selected 2013 from the list, what is displayed as the first image is a photo with an EXIF create date of 2010 and an Album date of 2013, the display below the photo is the file name and a date of 9th June 2013 which is the file date. The next set of photos shown are all created in 2008 NOT 2013 but again have file dates of 2013 and an Album date of 2013. So this view is NOT displaying the photos by EXIF create date but I think by file date. So how can I change this please? Select the pictures that have a wrong date, then Image -> AdjustTime&Date. In the box that opens, select EXIF:original as Timestamp used, and check whatever you want as Timestamp Updated. Marie-Noelle thanks for the advice.....
Well I'm having to do that for a huge number of photos. Considering this is a new digikam install and a first time adding the photos to a new database I am puzzled as to why it has not loaded them correctly first time. This was a new install on a new hard drive of Fedora 20 64bit with digikam 3.5.0. This is a command line tool, to be used with caution because it can do bad things very quickly if misused (practice on throwaway files). But once you know the right command exiftool can take care of thousands and thousands of file dates very quickly. So if you are not averse to the command line, it's an option. I don't know what your Digikam settings are. You can also try Tools -> Maintenance -> Sync Metadata and Database.2014-01-25 Stuart T Rogers <[hidden email]> Marie-Noelle thanks for the advice..... -- _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |

OK so doing as Marie-Noelle suggests corrects the image dates.
However (unless I have missed a setting somewhere) the calendar display is still wrong when under some circumstances. Allow me to explain... I have a Folder (Album to digikam) the date of which is 28/08/2013 but it contains photos which are as early as 01/01/2013 and as late as 26/08/2013, this folder is displayed later in the year display than folders of an earlier date containing photos from February 2013. It seems to me that there is an assumption that the folder date will be at least as early as the first photo contained therein. This maybe true if a collection is generated by importing photos into digikam but not always as the photos themselves maybe old. Also almost certainly not the case where an existing set of photos which were managed outside of digikam exist and digikam is merely pointed at a set of pre-existing folders. To my mind the calendar display should always display the photos from every album in date order irrespective of the album date. If the album needs to be identified it should be done by an option when right clicking on or hovering over the image. At the very least this method should be an option when using the calendar display. Have a look at Album Properties: you can set up album date as the Oldest / Average / Newest or any other date to you convenience.
You might want to check any setting available (Digikam configuration, View parameters and the like). I've never used the album date, nor paid attention to it, and my calendar view displays every picture at its creation date. Thanks again for the suggestions, however setting a date for an album
does not resolve the issue. My albums contain photos from various dates because they are grouped by content and not date. Therefore splitting the calendar view by album is for me useless, what I need is a calendar display which simply displays all the photos in date/time order irrespective of which album they are in or the date/time of that album. As far as I can tell this is not possible. I'm fairly sure that in the past in earlier versions of digikam this was the way the calendar view worked. 2014-01-26 Stuart T Rogers <[hidden email]> what I need is a calendar display which simply displays all the photos in date/time order irrespective of which album they are in or the date/time of that album. That's how it works - and always have worked - for me (using 3.5.0 version with SQLite). If your pictures don't appear at the right place in the calendar, their date are probably wrong in Digikam DB. That's why I advised to: 1) check Digikam settings regarding metadata and dates 2) modify the pictures that have a wrong date 3) then save the modifications to the DB. If all the metadata are in your picture files, it might be even quicker to move the DB file somewhere else, and start with a new database. Hi Stuart (and Gilles),
I think this could be considered a bug in the digikam calendar feature. Digikam should only look at the image EXiF dates, not at file dates, that kind of filtering is covered by search, and makes no sense in the calendar case.

Well it is not working for me. I have started with a new DB this was a
first time install of digikam on this laptop. The images were already all there in the hard drive in existing folders as they used to be organised in different software which did not allow for a calendar view. The images all now have correct dates as does the database. The situation is that the images in a calendar view are organised first by album with the earliest date, then the images in that album are organised by date. This works fine if the albums all do not contain images from a mixture of all dates and the album date is selected as oldest. However as soon as the albums all contain a mixture of dates the calendar view no longer displays all the images in proper chronological order by image. As I said earlier these albums are ordered by image content and as such may contain images from various dates. So this design of calendar view only works for one set of circumstances. In my view any calendar view should display every image in the collection purely in chronological order irrespective of the album containing them. Have you checked the View -> Group Images parameter? It should be on "Flat List" (F7 allows to select one of the three options in sequence). Marie-Noëlle _______________________________________________ Digikam-users mailing list [hidden email] https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/digikam-users |
Once again Marie-Noelle great advice.... that was the one option I
needed to change and now my calendar view is back to what I wanted. I suspect somewhere along the way the default of this option might have changed with updates because I dont remember ever having to do anything with this setting on my main desktop PC and it certainly had changed on that PC but the images are organised differently there. On the fresh install on the laptop it was set to By Album and not Flat List. Thanks again for persevering with me....
