tools --> creat mpeg slideshow portrait problem

cotcot
I rendered a number of photos with the --> tools --> create mjpeg slideshow function of digikam (0.9).
The photos are a mixture of portrait and landscape. The rendered video shows all portrait photos in landscape (so 90° rotating compared to the preview in digikam (and any other app such as gimp gthumb, nautilus, .).
I do not find any setting to correct it.
(I have posted this on the ubuntu forum yesterday but there is no reply till now.)

Could you give the precise versions of both
- digikam 0.9.x   x=?
- kipiplugins
(see the About information of digikam).

If I remember correctly, there was a bug fixed recently
about image rotations ..

Also note, that this is most likely
a kde-imaging (kipi-plugins) issue, because this is
what is used by digikam for the slideshow.

Thanks, Arnd

Re: tools --> creat mpeg slideshow portrait problem

Arnd Baecker
thanks for the info!
I was trying to search in the list of bugs, but:

"bugs.kde.org is temporarily offline to celebrate KDE 4.0.0 launch."

(I better save my comments about this offlining for a
quiet room in my house ...)

So this will have to wait until the party is over ....

Re: tools --> creat mpeg slideshow portrait problem

cotcot
I think I have solved the mpeg slideshow problem.
I have done a couple of tests to understand better where the 'rotate photo' is stored and which rotate info is used during mpeg rendering.
If I rotate a photo with digikam or gthumb the exiv data do not change. If i do so with gimp the exiv data change.
If a portrait photo is shown as landscape i have 'right-top' in the exiv data. Turning it with digikam or gthumb is still 'right-top'; when i open a 'right-top' photo in gimp then gimp asks automatically to correct the orientation. Answering yes makes the exiv data change to 'top-left'.
Making a slideshow with digikam, kdenlive or cinelerra shows the photos with 'top-left' correctly.
So the digikam mpeg slideshow problem seems solved. I am now somewhat confused with the photo orientation. Obviously it does not make sense to rotate photos with digikam if you render them to a slideshow with digikam or any other tools ? Or do I need to thick 'Embedded preview of the full image size' in the Album settings' ?
And another question is that my digital camera (Canon 350D) sometimes does the orientation correction and sometimes does not. This needs some experimenting but has nothing to do with digikam.

Image rotation is handled by:
  Product: kipiplugins
  Component: jpeglossless

To me this sounds like a bug which has been fixed,
maybe this one:
  http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148621

I think this fix was done after your version
kipiplugins 0.1.4-1build1  (ubuntu gutsy)

the slideshow should also auto-rotate images correctly ...

Everything should work without any additional thoughts.
In current version most of the image rotation issues
should be solved.
If you observe a problem with the latest version,
i.e. digikam 0.9.3 and
kipi-plugins 0.1.5-rc1
libkipi 0.1.5
libkexif 0.2.5
libkexiv2 0.1.6
libkdcraw 0.1.3
(see http://www.kipi-plugins.org/drupal/?q=node/5)
and exiv2 0.16 (http://www.exiv2.org/)
then please file a bug report in the bug tracker.
(Note that to check this most likely will mean
that you will have to compile from source ...)

I also have that camera and rarely encounter orientation
problems. Only for very wierd shooting angles
the orientation detection gives incorrect results ...

Best, Arnd

Re: tools --> creat mpeg slideshow portrait problem

cotcot
It is OK now. I have compiled everything mentioned in the previous post and also digikam 0.9.3 on my test distro (gutsy 32 bit).
During import of the images I saw that digikam has put the orientation in the exif info all top-left (as it should). Rotating images is also OK. (in digikam 0.9.2 i have to give the rotate instruction sometimes twice to get it working).
The mpeg movie from the image made with the kipi plugin is OK.
Thanks and congratulations !
