Which digiKam version are you using? On which platform?
Nothing has changed in digiKam-7.2.0 in either case.
Whether the preview is opened with a single click or a double click depends on
the desktop settings. So mostly double click under Windows, as well as Ubuntu,
under a KF5 desktop mostly single click.
The extensions are still displayed in the (F2) renaming dialog.
