This feature is not yet implemented. There is a bug report for it if i remember...

Not sure if this is the right way to ask a question which is not a bug report but here goes...

Is there a way to apply metadata (e.g. Caption: "Christmas 1999") to multiple images with a single operation?

The current multiple selection of thumbs followed by Ctrl + Shift + M gives Next and Previous buttons but it is not much of a time-saving since a copy, paste and apply action is required for every image.
