It really doesn't make sense to solve this at the filesystem level. Being a happy bibble user and having tested Apple's Aperture, I'm convinced that if digikam wants to play in the same league as both of these programs, it will have to go the same way for image editing, that is to keep the original file untouched and to store the edition commands seperately.
